Job description

Wage Range: $25.62 - $39.18 per hour

Posted wage ranges represent the entire range from minimum to maximum. For jobs with more than one level, the posted range reflects the minimum of the lowest level and the maximum of the highest level. Some positions also offer additional premiums based on shift, certifications, or degrees. Job offers are determined based on a candidate's years of relevant experience, level of education, and internal equity.

Job Summary:

Performs venipuncture and capillary specimen collection on patients demonstrating age-specific competencies. Depending on work location, performs in-house phlebotomy, processing, or in a physician office setting. Demonstrates effective communication among laboratory colleagues, clients, physicians, medical office staff, and patients. Provides timely and accurate information upon request. Acts as an ambassador of the laboratory, demonstrating excellent customer service and using AIDET to alleviate patient anxiety. This position requires travel to multiple draw sites during the work week.

Primary Duties:

  1. Performs venipuncture and capillary puncture blood sample collections on patients of all age groups. Accurately identifies and labels all specimens following established laboratory protocol.
  2. Uses the laboratory information system and other reference laboratory web-based applications to independently resolve complex issues in a sensitive, caring, and timely manner.
  3. Processes all specimens according to laboratory protocol, including proper handling, centrifugation, storage, packaging, and transport.
  4. Collects all insurance/financial information necessary for proper billing. Demonstrates knowledge of requirements for collecting ABNs and filling out MSPQ information.
  5. Accurately enters orders and patient demographic information into the laboratory information system.
  6. Trains new phlebotomists at multiple locations, serving as a resource.
  7. Adheres to department policies on safety, infection control, and PPE usage.
  8. Communicates any unfinished tasks to appropriate personnel at shift change.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

License, Certification, Education or Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent, or applicable coursework for WA State Medical Assistant-Phlebotomy (MA-P) Certification.
  • At least 3 years of experience in a clinical laboratory role.
  • Certification from an approved laboratory training program with internship, or relevant work experience preferred.
  • WA Medical Assistant-Phlebotomy (MA-P) certification upon hire.
  • Current Healthcare Provider BLS from the American Heart Association by start date.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in customer service with clinicians and office staff.
  • Knowledge of Medicare and Washington state medical Test Site regulations, as well as CAP (ASCP) and TJC inspection criteria.
