Position Summary

This position assists technical lab staff and may be responsible for the collection, receipt, and processing of biological specimens into the department, preparation of samples for analytical testing, and may perform waived and/or limited moderate complexity testing if CLIA minimum requirements are met or as approved by the CLIA Medical Director. This position reports to department leadership and takes direction from higher-level technical personnel.

Core Functions

  • Process and prepare patient samples, including specimen collection, ensuring correct patient and specimen identification and specimen integrity; general laboratory specimen processing; referral laboratory processing. Perform waived and moderate complexity testing under supervision, adhering to performance standards. Demonstrate understanding of computer systems used in the department. Track and locate missing specimens and monitor pending lists. Perform maintenance on laboratory equipment. Comply with accrediting agency and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure work accuracy, completeness, and timeliness to meet department standards. Participate in quality control, troubleshooting, and communication of technical concerns. Detect and document procedural deviations. Follow established methods, demonstrate problem-solving skills, and maintain acceptable specimen rejection rates.
  • Assist with departmental financial responsibilities through proper use of supplies, materials, and inventory management. Contribute to initiatives to reduce costs and improve service.
  • Support miscellaneous duties such as phlebotomy and training. Contribute to updating training documents and procedures.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with internal and external customers. Use computer systems for inquiries and problem-solving. Maintain good communication and teamwork. Attend staff meetings.

Physical Demands/Environment

Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and stretch frequently. Use of equipment to push/pull up to 75 lbs, lift/push/pull up to 25 lbs. Manual dexterity required. Use standard precautions due to exposure risks. Ability to distinguish colors, follow instructions, and use computers and department equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; must be 18+ if performing phlebotomy.
  • Progression through career ladder levels subject to requirements.
  • Possession or ability to obtain DHS Fingerprinting Certification.
  • Valid state driver’s license if required.
  • Phlebotomy/CLA certification as per state regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous clinical laboratory experience.
  • Completion of a laboratory assistant program.
  • Knowledge of specimen requirements and handling.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Additional related education or experience.
