Job summary

UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas seeks a Laboratory Technician to handle and process specimens, accession into LIS, and prepare samples for testing. Shift is Mon-Fri 8:00–4:30, on-site position with competitive benefits.

Requires a High School Diploma and 2 years of related laboratory experience; some college is acceptable. Emphasis on patient confidentiality and accurate specimen storage, with growth opportunities and a strong benefits package.

Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma or equivalent; some college is preferred.
• Experience: 2 years of related laboratory experience; related coursework may count.
• Competencies: accurate specimen handling and strict confidentiality.

Responsibilities

• Handle and process specimens according to departmental protocols.
• Specimen accession into LIS; prepare specimens for testing; basic tasks with automated analyzers.
• Maintain specimen storage systems and ensure patient identification confidentiality.
• Ensure timely submission of specimens to reference laboratories.
• Answer telephone inquiries and provide verified test result information.
• Establish priorities and organize activities to achieve efficient results.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

JOB DUTIES

• Handle and process specimens according to departmental protocols.
• Peform the following duties: specimen management (receive specimens from phlebotomists and nursing floors); specimen accession into LIS; prepare specimens for testing; basic technical tasks (placing samples in automated analyzer, streak culture plates, etc.); submit specimens to testing department; store and manage specimens according to retention protocols.
• Maintain accurate and easy-to-use specimen storage systems. Monitor and maintain accurate patient identification and confidentiality for all samples in accordance with departmental protocol.
• Ensure specimens sent to reference laboratories are submitted to referral department in a timely manner.
• Answer telephone inquiries and provide verified test result information per the LIS system.
• Establish priorities and organize activities to achieve optimum and efficient results. Complete assigned functions in appropriate time intervals.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
