The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center is hiring a Clinical Lab Assistant in Dallas to handle and process specimens, accession into LIS, and perform basic technical tasks in a busy clinical lab. Applicants should have at least a high school diploma and 2 years of related laboratory experience; some college coursework may substitute for experience.

Responsibilities

• Handle and process specimens according to departmental protocols.
• Perform specimen accession into LIS and prepare specimens for testing.
• Carry out basic technical tasks (placing samples in automated analyzers, streak culture plates, etc.).
• Submit specimens to testing department and manage specimen storage with retention protocols.
• Maintain accurate patient identification and confidentiality for all samples.

JOB DUTIES

• Handle and process specimens according to departmental protocols.
• Peform the following duties: specimen management (receive specimens from phlebotomists and nursing floors); specimen accession into LIS; prepare specimens for testing; basic technical tasks (placing samples in automated analyzer, streak culture plates, etc.); submit specimens to testing department; store and manage specimens according to retention protocols.
• Maintain accurate and easy-to-use specimen storage systems. Monitor and maintain accurate patient identification and confidentiality for all samples in accordance with departmental protocol.
• Ensure specimens sent to reference laboratories are submitted to referral department in a timely manner.
• Answer telephone inquiries and provide verified test result information per the LIS system.
• Establish priorities and organize activities to achieve optimum and efficient results. Complete assigned functions in appropriate time intervals.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
