This is a full-time, 0.8, 9-month faculty position with primary responsibility for laboratory and clinical teaching, and limited expectation for scholarly contributions or university service. The teaching load for this position includes approximately 2528 hours of laboratory and clinical teaching per week for both the fall and spring semesters with the expectation to teach in one evening clinic per week. Clinical teaching may include off-campus fieldwork sites. Remaining time each week will be spent on clinical support activities. Weekly work schedule will be established each semester based on laboratory and clinical schedule and may include evening hours.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIESProvide laboratory and clinical instruction and supervision for dental hygiene students.Evaluate student clinical skills, give constructive feedback and provide remediation.Monitor patient care to ensure that patients receive safe and appropriate care.Assist with orientation, calibration and supervision of part-time clinical instructors.Assess the completeness and accuracy of student, patient and clinic records.Maintain confidentiality of information related to students, patients, faculty and staff.Monitor student, patient and instructor compliance with clinical policies and procedures.Serve as a role model for the dental hygiene profession.Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of clinic equipment according to manufacturer guidelines and clinic protocolsAssist Clinic coordinators with pre- and post-semester supply distribution and inventoryLead pre- and post- semester clinic preparationSECONDARY FUNCTIONSOther duties as assigned by the Program Director.JOB SCOPEThe Clinical Instructor is primarily self-directed with some guidance from the Director of Clinical Operations. The Clinical Instructor has decision-making authority within the parameters of this position.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITYThe Clinical Instructor will provide supervision for 4-8 part-time clinical instructors when a lead clinic faculty member is not available.QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIRED KNOWLEDGEGraduation from an accredited dental hygiene programBachelor’s degree in dental hygiene or related field; master’s degree preferredOregon dental hygiene license with local anesthesia endorsement, nitrous oxide permit and restorative functions endorsement; expanded practice permit preferredCurrent knowledge of dental infection control procedures, radiation safety, emergency management, HIPAA and FERPACurrent certification in Basic Life Support for Healthcare ProvidersFormal preparation in educational theory and teaching methodsKnowledge of current concepts in dental hygiene and dental hygiene educationCurrent teaching experience in clinical dental hygiene educationCurrent clinical experience as a licensed dental hygienistExperience working with patients who have limited access to dental careExperience with computer-based dental practice management systemsExperience with Microsoft Office computer software including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.Excellent interpersonal and communication skillsREQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & BEHAVIORSDemonstrates high level of organizational skill and attention to detailOrganizes tasks, sets priorities and manages multiple projectsWorks both independently and as a team memberCommunicates effectively with students, patients, faculty and staffSpeaks and understands basic Spanish appropriate to a dental settingEstablishes professional relationships and maintains appropriate boundariesResponds appropriately to stressful situations, accidents and emergenciesPresents a professional appearance and attitudeWORKING CONDITIONSPrimary work setting is a 16-chair dental clinic teaching facility located on the health professions campus of a private university.
