Clinical Hematopathologist / Flow Cytometry

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Department of Laboratory Medicine is seeking a full-time academic faculty member in the area of hematopathology with an emphasis on flow cytometry interpretation to serve the UCSF Clinical Laboratories at Moffit-Long, Mission Bay, and Mt Zion Hospitals. The position is at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level in the Health Sciences Clinical, Clinical X or In Residence series depending on qualifications and interests. All appointments require a strong commitment to Pathology resident teaching.

JOB DUTIES: Include but not limited to

  • Provide flow cytometry interpretation and reports - the hematology/flow cytometry service is growing dramatically, commensurate with the growth in the number of Hematology/Oncology patients seen at UCSF. The flow cytometry section performs approximately 4000 leukemia/lymphoma analyses and over 8000 routine lymphocyte subset analyses.
  • Provide assistance to the hematopathology service for interpretation of bone marrow and lymph node biopsy specimens as well as evaluation of blood smears, coagulation, and other hematology tests.
  • Provide interpretation of serum/urine protein electrophoresis and immunofixation results.
  • Provide teaching to pathology residents, fellows, and medical students.
  • Work closely with other clinical laboratorians in the Clinical Laboratories at UCSF, and with clinical colleagues in other departments (including Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, and others).
  • Assist in clinical teaching, on-call activities, conferences, and administrative duties.
  • Clinical/translational research or other creative scholarly activities are required for applicants in the Clinical X series.

DESIRABLE ATTRIBUTES:

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MD or MD/PhD degree.
  • Board certification in Clinical Pathology and subspecialty certification in Hematopathology at the time of hire.
  • Board certification in Anatomic Pathology is beneficial at the time of hire.
  • Eligibility for medical licensure in California at the time of hire.
  • A minimum of two years' experience in clinical hematopathology and/or flow cytometry interpretation at the time of hire.

The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. The minimum base salary range for this position is $149,700-$393,200. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.
