In addition, the incumbent assists the family with appropriate referrals within Kennedy Krieger and in the community (i.e., school, medical, social, etc.). This position will have a variety of training opportunities, and this assignment provides temporary employment opportunities to coincide with and supplement the Clinical Fellow training experience. Some children and families for whom direct care is provided will be Spanish-speaking, and this position requires the incumbent to be bilingual in English and Spanish with a proficiency level that meets the Institute’s minimum standards.

Responsibilities
  • Provide parent training and therapy programs that focus on resolving an identified condition or diminishing its functional impact, with consideration given to setting clear and measurable goals and incorporating child and family needs, interests, abilities, and perspective. Utilize a range of techniques to engage children and families, some of whom will be Spanish-speaking.
  • Provide home, telehealth and center-based functional communication (i.e., speech and language), oral motor, and feeding assessments to determine presence and (where detected) degree of handicapping conditions, with consideration to child and family’s needs.
  • Initiate and maintain contact with referral sources, as well as other Institute and community providers, to assist in service coordination and to foster productive community relationships.
  • Maintain documentation consistent with Institute and Department expectations for all activities, as well as guidelines by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), COMAR, and relevant accreditation agencies.
  • Participate in intra-disciplinary and interdisciplinary activities relative to patient care (e.g., team conferences) and professional training (e.g., staff development activities).
  • Participate in departmental activities and outreach activities in the community (e.g., presentations, services on committees).
  • Qualifications
    • Must possess and maintain Speech-Language Pathologist – Limited License through the Maryland Board of Audiologists, Hearing Aid Dispensers and Speech Language Pathologists.
    • Must possess and maintain cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification.
    • Must be bilingual in English and Spanish with a proficiency level that meets the Institute’s minimum standards. Able to speak Spanish fluently with ease and confidence in a variety of topics related to work, home, leisure activities, as well as events of current, public or personal interest or individual relevance. Able to convey intended message with accuracy, clarity and precision without misrepresentation or confusion while being readily understood by native speakers.

    EDUCATION:

    • Successful completion of a Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology, with related clinical requirements, required.
