Job summary

University of Iowa Health Care seeks a Clinical Documentation Specialist for full-time work. The role focuses on improving documentation accuracy through provider queries, chart reviews, and collaboration with coding and quality teams.

Initial training occurs on-site; after onboarding, remote work within Iowa is possible. A nursing background, Iowa license, and CCDS certification within 3 years are required or encouraged.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in nursing or master’s degree in nursing (MNHP or MSN) required.
• Current Iowa nursing license required.
• Must obtain CCDS certification within 3 years of hire.
• Professional written and verbal communication skills required.
• Demonstrates ability to educate in multiple styles.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with physicians, nursing staff and interdisciplinary teams.
• Organizational, time management and problem-solving skills required.

Responsibilities

• Establish collaborative relationships to improve accuracy and completeness of inpatient documentation.
• Demonstrate knowledge of MS-DRGs and inpatient quality metrics.
• Attend huddles or rounds on units.
• Provide education on clinical documentation opportunities and coding issues.
• Conduct record reconciliation and assign appropriate working DRG.
• Document in the 3M CDI module.
• Capture potential secondary diagnoses for coding.
• Maintain knowledge of clinical care and treatment for accuracy.
• Adhere to attendance and policies and participate in committees.
