Job summary

Safe Space Residential seeks a Clinical Director to provide clinical leadership, oversight of behavioral health programs, and regulatory compliance, reporting to the Executive Team.

The role collaborates with CSBs, hospitals, and community partners, overseeing LMHPs/QMHPs, ensuring person-centered, trauma-informed services, and driving quality improvement across programs.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Human Services, Healthcare Administration, or related field.
  • Licensed Mental Health Professional (LMHP) in Virginia.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of clinical experience in behavioral health.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Working knowledge of DBHDS, DMAS, Medicaid, licensing standards.
  • Valid Virginia driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Executive Team, the Clinical Director provides clinical leadership, administrative oversight, and operational accountability for the behavioral health programs operated by Safe Space Residential.

The Clinical Director is responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality, person-centered behavioral health services while maintaining compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. This position oversees clinical operations, supervises clinical leadership and staff, promotes quality improvement initiatives, and supports the organization's strategic growth and long-term success.

The Clinical Director works collaboratively with the Executive Team, internal departments, referral partners, Community Services Boards (CSBs), hospitals, and other community stakeholders to strengthen service delivery and organizational partnerships.

Success in this role requires strong leadership, sound clinical judgment, professionalism, adaptability, and a demonstrated commitment to teamwork and collaboration.

Essential Job Functions
Clinical Leadership
  • Provide clinical leadership and oversight for behavioral health services.
  • Ensure services are delivered in accordance with evidence-based, person-centered, and trauma-informed practices.
  • Provide clinical consultation and guidance to leadership and staff.
  • Support the development of a positive, collaborative, and accountable clinical culture.
Program Oversight
  • Oversee day-to-day clinical operations and program performance.
  • Monitor service quality and implement continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Develop, review, and maintain clinical policies and procedures.
  • Evaluate operational and clinical outcomes and recommend improvements.
Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with DBHDS, DMAS, Medicaid, licensing requirements, and all applicable regulations.
  • Maintain readiness for licensing reviews, audits, and inspections.
  • Monitor documentation quality and regulatory compliance.
  • Assist with corrective action planning and implementation when necessary.
Leadership & Staff Development
  • Supervise Licensed Mental Health Professionals (LMHPs), Qualified Mental Health Professionals (QMHPs), the Program Director for clinical oversight, and other clinical personnel as assigned.
  • Provide coaching, mentorship, supervision, and professional development opportunities.
  • Participate in hiring, onboarding, performance evaluations, and disciplinary processes as needed.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous learning.
Organizational Development
  • Support the development of new behavioral health programs and services.
  • Assist with licensing applications, policy development, implementation planning, staffing models, and operational readiness for future service expansion.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Team on strategic initiatives and organizational planning.
  • Participate in organizational committees, leadership meetings, and special projects as assigned.
Community Collaboration
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with referral sources, Community Services Boards (CSBs), hospitals, managed care organizations, and community partners.
  • Represent Safe Space Residential professionally in meetings and collaborative initiatives.
  • Support efforts to strengthen referral relationships and improve continuity of care.
Qualifications
Required
  • Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Human Services, Healthcare Administration, or a related field.
  • Licensed Mental Health Professional (LMHP) in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of clinical experience in behavioral health.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Working knowledge of DBHDS, DMAS, Medicaid, licensing standards, and behavioral health regulations.
  • Valid Virginia driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Preferred
  • Experience in crisis services or residential behavioral health settings.
  • Experience with program development, regulatory compliance, and quality improvement initiatives.
