For an accomplished senior clinician/intensivist with proven leadership experience, this is a chance help shape the future of critical care within in our rapidly expanding critical care department. Based at Waikato Hospital, a major tertiary centre, this is an exceptional opportunity to lead a team at the forefront of intensive care delivery in New Zealand.

As part of a significant transformation, our unit is undergoing growth in services and infrastructure that is laying the foundation for a future-ready, regionally connected critical care service.

About the Role

As Clinical Director, you will lead a high-performing multidisciplinary team through a pivotal phase of growth. Our unit currently manages over 4,000 ICU and HDU admissions annually and is accredited at C24 level by the College of Critical Care Medicine. You'll be supported by:

  • 25 registrars (including 6 Advanced Registrars) delivering 24/7 coverage
  • A growing Fellowship programme (2 Fellows currently, planned to expand by 3)
  • A well-established nursing team providing 24/7 oversight
  • A full-time Project Manager and Recruiter appointed to support ICU expansion

About Waikato Hospital and the Region

Waikato Hospital is a 722-bed tertiary referral and teaching hospital, serving as the regional hub for the Midland area, which covers Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Lakes, Tairāwhiti, and Taranaki regions. We provide a comprehensive range of medical and surgical specialties, including:

  • Cardiac and neurosurgery (we are home to NZ's second largest cardiac surgery centre)
  • Regional paediatric services
  • Accredited Trauma Centre; andRegional Burns Unit within the National Burns Service
  • Advanced diagnostics and treatment facilities
  • Teaching affiliations with the University of Auckland, University of Waikato, and Wintec

About You

You are a senior clinician with:

  • Eligibility for specialist registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) in a Critical Care Vocational scope of practice
  • A collaborative, future-focused approach to leadership
  • Experience managing and developing multidisciplinary teams

You'll work in close partnership with clinical and operational leaders to ensure the delivery of high-quality, equitable care across the region, and the ongoing development of the Critical Care Department.
