This position works with the medical team to provide optimal medical nutrition therapy to all patients, including infants, pediatrics, adults, and geriatrics. The role involves collaborating with other department members to improve food service and quality care to patients.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
- Registration with the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics.
- Licensure through the West Virginia Board of Licensed Dietitians, or applicable state licensure where services will be performed.
- State criminal background check, and federal if applicable, as required for state department of health (e.g., PA DOH, OH DOH, MD DOH, WV DHHR) regulated areas based on work location.

- One year of clinical experience preferred.
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following outlines the general responsibilities of this role. Other duties may be assigned as needed.
- Provide comprehensive, high-quality medical nutrition therapy to patients.
- Complete physician-ordered consults and instructions according to standards of care and document in medical records. Communicate with physicians regarding concerns or recommendations.
- Document NPO/Clear Liquid notes by day five and follow-up until nutrition is provided, unless contraindicated.
- Accurately complete and document calorie counts; provide summaries within 24 hours if results influence nutritional recommendations.
- Calculate and report nitrogen balance and metabolic cart study results promptly and accurately.
- Perform and document nutrition assessments on high-risk patients, including diet appropriateness, tube feeding adequacy, laboratory values, drug-nutrient interactions, and care plan development.
- Utilize order writing privileges (with physician co-signature) for Medical Nutrition Therapies within scope of practice, as approved by hospital policies.
- Maintain current registration, licensure, and clinical competency, verified through annual performance evaluations.
- Follow up on assessments and consults according to standards.
- Participate in local or national meetings/conferences as required.
- Supervise and guide nutritional therapy support team activities, document errors or interactions, and participate in disciplinary actions when necessary.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other staff to optimize patient nutrition care, including diet modifications and medication timing.
- Address patient food complaints, provide alternatives, and coordinate with food service management.
- Develop and teach educational sessions for interns and other healthcare personnel, including community outreach.
- Mentor interns, review their documentation, and evaluate their progress during rotations.
- Present in-services and lectures to healthcare teams and community groups as requested.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Work primarily occurs in patient care units, with some office, classroom, and community speaking engagements. Accommodations will be made as needed.
