Job description

The University of Iowa Hospital Downtown Campus is seeking a Clinical Dietitian II or a Clinical Dietitian I. As a Clinical Dietitian, you will play a crucial role in helping patients reach health goals in our full-spectrum weight management program that includes medically managed weight loss, mental health, dietary, and physical activity support. You will be responsible for providing comprehensive nutrition assessments, education, and counseling to patients, and working closely with a multidisciplinary team to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients.

University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown (located at 500 E. Market Street, Iowa City, IA) is a 194-bed hospital that became part of Iowa’s only comprehensive academic health system on Jan. 31, 2024.

Other Duties:

  • Conduct nutrition assessments: Perform thorough evaluations of patient nutritional status, medical history, dietary habits, and lifestyle to develop individualized nutrition care plans.
  • Provide nutrition counseling: Educate and counsel patients on the importance of proper nutrition, portion control, and behavior modification to support long-term weight loss and maintenance.
  • Develop personalized meal plans: Create tailored meal plans that meet patients’ specific dietary needs, taking into consideration such factors as bariatric surgery, medical conditions, allergies, and personal preferences.
  • Monitor patient progress: Regularly monitor patient progress, review dietary adherence, and make necessary adjustments to meal plans and other nutrition goals to optimize outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team: Work closely with surgeons, nurses, psychologists, and other healthcare professionals to provide a holistic approach to patient management.
  • Conduct group education sessions: Lead group education sessions to educate patients on topics such as nutritional guidelines, healthy cooking techniques, and behavioral strategies for successful weight management.
  • Maintain knowledge of dietary research and best practices: Continuously update your knowledge of bariatric nutrition, obesity management, and related research to provide evidence-based recommendations and contribute to the clinic's ongoing development.
  • Support pre- and post-operative care: Assist in pre-operative evaluations, including pre-surgical diet counseling, and provide ongoing post-operative nutrition support and education.
  • Document and maintain patient records: Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including progress notes, meal plans, and communication with the healthcare team.
  • Conduct community outreach: Participate in community outreach programs, workshops, and events to promote the clinic's services and raise awareness about bariatric healthcare and nutrition.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Downtown Campus intends to hire one position at either the Clinical Dietitian I classification or Clinical Dietitian II classification, based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. Minimum Eligibility Requirements:

  • Clinical Dietitian I and Clinical Dietitian II: A Master's Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Clinical Dietitian I and Clinical Dietitian II: Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Clinical Dietitian I and Clinical Dietitian II: Strong understanding of nutrition principles, macronutrients, and their impact on weight management and health.
  • Clinical Dietitian I and Clinical Dietitian II: Familiarity with behavior modification techniques and counseling skills to address emotional eating, binge eating and other related issues.
  • Clinical Dietitian II: 5 years of clinical nutrition experience.
  • Clinical Dietitian II: Must demonstrate experience working effectively in any environment.

Certifications (Clinical Dietitian I and Clinical Dietitian II):

  • Registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration is required.
  • Licensure by the State of Iowa is required.
