Job description

DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan is one of the nation’s largest hospitals specializing in rehabilitation medicine and research. RIM is known for its clinical expertise in spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, amputee, orthopedics, and catastrophic injury care. The Institute houses the Center for Spinal Cord Injury Recovery and the Southeastern Michigan Traumatic Brain Injury System (SEMTBIS), one of only 16 federally designated model systems of care for brain injury care and research. RIM also operates 31 outpatient sites throughout southeast Michigan specializing in sports medicine and orthopedics.

Job Summary

Reports to the Director, DMC Nutrition Services. The Nutritionist conducts nutrition assessments for patients identified at nutritional risk to determine appropriate nutrition therapy plans. Assessments include evaluation of medical history, medication/herbal supplement history, anthropometric measurements, lab values, diet history, age-specific factors, cultural and religious practices, and barriers to learning. Nutrition Care Plans are developed based on the assessment and involve input from a multidisciplinary team. Records are maintained in patient records using DMC-approved documentation.

  1. Acts as a resource for hospital personnel and medical staff regarding nutrition; participates in multidisciplinary rounds and provides nutrition education to departments.
  2. Researches and develops programs for dietetic interns; participates in their education by providing nutrition instruction.
  3. Participates in research projects and nutrition-related programs.
  4. Collaborates with outside agencies to support patient needs.
  5. Maintains departmental policies, procedures, and process improvements to ensure high-quality patient care.
  6. Manages inventory and orders supplies for office and tube feeding.
  7. Monitors foodservice personnel to ensure nutritional standards are met; follows up with patients on dietary adherence.
  8. Develops special recipes or plans tailored to patient needs.
  9. Provides excellent customer service and promotes positive guest relations.
  10. Demonstrates behaviors aligned with the institute's values, including quality, community welfare, respect, teamwork, communication, innovation, education, and resource efficiency.
Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree in Nutrition/Dietetics.
  2. Completion of a Dietetic Internship in a healthcare setting or supervised practice program, lasting 6 to 12 months.
  3. Registration with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics or eligibility to take the registry exam within 6 months of internship completion.
  4. Registration required for working with patients with inherited metabolic disorders.
