Job Description
The Clinical Dietitian Nutritionist 1 is responsible for identifying patients at nutritional risk, conducting nutrition assessments, and implementing a tailored nutrition care plan based on individual needs. The role involves planning and delivering nutrition care aligned with medical diagnoses and principles of growth from infancy through adolescence. The dietitian communicates recommendations to physicians and healthcare providers, analyzes the effectiveness of interventions, and adjusts plans as necessary. Acts as a nutrition resource for healthcare team members, students, interns, and residents.
Responsibilities
- Patient Care
- Provide medical nutrition therapy, including intervention and education for patients and families at nutritional risk.
- Utilize the Nutrition Care Process to determine diagnoses, develop intervention plans, and apply evidence-based practices.
- Perform nutrition-focused physical exams (NFPE) during assessments to determine risk or malnutrition.
- Update patient care plans based on monitoring and reassessment.
- Communicate changes in patient care to the healthcare team.
- Follow department policies for nutrition screening and assessment.
- Develop individualized nutrition care plans for inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Apply knowledge of medical nutritional therapy and age-specific nutritional needs.
- Use monitoring and evaluation techniques considering cultural, religious, and ethnic factors.
- Document all patient encounters accurately, including PES statements and supporting evidence.
- Maintain accountability for protected health information (PHI) and adhere to safety practices.
- Education and Professional Development
- Serve as a resource on nutrition issues for healthcare staff.
- Interpret and present current clinical knowledge and research to improve patient care.
- Complete educational activities and update relevant handbooks.
- Develop a professional growth plan with CDR for continued competence.
- Apply standards of practice and performance tools to measure and advance practice.
- Performance Improvement
- Adhere to departmental and hospital policies, safety, and infection control standards.
- Participate in meetings and quality improvement activities.
- Promote professional performance through education and training.
- Utilize evidence-based resources and implement new clinical practices as appropriate.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
- Other Duties as Assigned
- Perform additional tasks as requested.
Qualifications
- Clinical experience as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.
- Experience in a nutrition-related field, especially pediatric nutrition.
- Bachelor's Degree and completion of an accredited Dietetics Internship Program.
- Master's degree in a nutrition-related field (preferred).
- Louisiana Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist (LDN).
