Description

The Department of Biomedical Informatics at Stony Brook University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank with a focus on Clinical Data Science. We seek an outstanding scientist, physician-scientist, or clinically oriented informatics scholar committed to advancing the field of clinical data science and improving human health through innovative research, translation and education. The successful candiate will be expected to establish and externally funded research program that leverages real-world clinical data, data science, and artificial intelligence to drive biomedical discovery, improve clinical care, and support data-informed decision‑making. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, advanced electronic health record‑based phenotyping and predicitive modeling; machine learning; foundation models, and generative AI for clinical and biomedical applicaitons; real‑world evidence generation and causal inference; clinical decision support; clinical natural language process; trustworthy, interpretable, and responsible AI; implementation and evaluation of informatics interventions; and analytic methods that support clinical, translational, operational, and population health decision‑making. This position is intended to strengthen the Department's research portfolio in clinical data science while advancing translational clinical informatics through methods, tools, and studies that can be evaluated, piloted, and deployed in real‑world research and clinical environments. The successfull candidate will be encouraged to collaborate across Stony Brook Medicine, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and other University units to develop high‑impact research programs that bridge methodological innovation with clinical and translational needs. The faculty member will also contribute to graduate teaching, mentor students and trainees, and provide services to the Department, School, University, and broader professional community. Candidates considered for appointment at the Associate Professor level will typically have an established record of independent scholarship, external funding, national recognition, interdisciplinary research leadership, and mentorship of students and trainees. Experience leading clinical data science or informatics initiatives that bridge methodological innovation with real‑world clinical, translational, or health‑system impact is highly desireable.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. degree (or foreign equivalent) in Biomedical Informatics, Articial Intelligence, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • In lieu of a Ph.D. degree, a M.D. degree (foreign equivalent or higher) with clinical informatics or data science training, or with a Masters degree (foreign equivalent or higher) with a focus on clinical informatics or data science.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Record of scholarly productivity or strong potential for scholarly productivity in clinical data science.
  • Demonstrated ability or strong potential to establish an independent research program and contribute to interdisciplinary research teams.
  • For appointment at the Associate Professor level, an established record of funded research, sustained scholarly productivity, national recognition, and successful mentorship is preferred.
