Overview
The Clinical Assistant plays a dual role in front and back office clinical functions, spending about 50% of their time in each role. They perform clerical duties and assist in patient examinations and treatments under the supervision of licensed medical and nursing staff.
Responsibilities
- Provide customer service to patients, including greeting, scheduling, confirming appointments, data entry into NextGen, and creating patient files.
- Facilitate patient check-in and check-out, explain payment options including sliding scale fees, Medicare, Medicaid, and other assistance programs.
- Collect and post payments, prepare deposits, and follow cash handling procedures.
- Complete patient intakes, income screenings, and conduct insurance verifications and authorizations.
- Address patient grievances and provide conflict resolution.
- Create and maintain confidential patient records and files.
- Record patient history and vital signs accurately.
- Prepare examination rooms, sterilize instruments, and manage medical supplies.
- Assist with patient examinations under licensed staff supervision.
- Explain treatment procedures to patients as directed.
- May draw blood samples, prepare specimens, and assist in laboratory tests.
- Administer medications as ordered by licensed staff.
- Ensure quality metrics are met as per the Quality Council.
- Follow standing orders and protocols for treatments.
- Maintain clinical competencies as defined by the Quality Council.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum six months of experience in administrative or related roles; healthcare setting experience preferred.
- Current Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association required.
- Medical Assistant Certification from recognized organizations preferred, such as:
- CMA - American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
- RMA - American Medical Technologists (AMT)
- CCMA - National Health Career Association (NHA)
- NRCMA - National Association of Health Professionals (NAHP)
- NCMA - National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
- Prior professional Medical Assistant experience is a plus.
- Proficiency in Spanish is preferred.
