Job summary

Medstar Washington Hospital Center is seeking an experienced Nursing Supervisor/Clinical Administrator to provide shift-based leadership across hospital units, ensuring safe, high-quality patient care. You will coordinate staffing, manage complex clinical situations, and partner with leaders to optimize operations and emergencies.

This role requires strong clinical judgment, DC RN licensure, and BLS certification, with a trajectory toward nursing excellence.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing is required.
• Master’s degree in Nursing or health-related field preferred.
• 3–4 years of progressive critical care nursing experience required.
• Nursing leadership or management experience preferred.
• Current District of Columbia RN license or compact state licensure.
• BLS certification required.
• Strong problem-solving skills with independent judgment.

Responsibilities

• Provide shift-based leadership and oversight of clinical operations across units.
• Assess and respond to complex clinical, operational, and patient safety situations with independent judgment.
• Coordinate nursing staffing to ensure appropriate coverage based on acuity and census.
• Collaborate with Nurse Leaders and Float Pool to optimize staffing resources.
• Monitor high-risk patients and facilitate necessary interventions and escalation.
• Support emergency preparedness and hospital response during emergencies.
• Collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to resolve care concerns.
• Promote patient safety, accountability, and clinical excellence.
• Round to assess patient care needs and identify improvements.
• Support patient flow with Capacity Management and Admissions.

We are seeking an exceptional Clinical Administrator to provide clinical and operational leadership at Medstar Washington Hospital Center. Level I Trauma Center in Washington, DC.

This is an exciting opportunity for a visible, collaborative nursing leader who will serve as a key hospital resource during off-shifts, ensuring safe patient care, effective staffing, strong clinical operations, and timely response to emerging needs across the organization.

What You’ll Do

As Nursing Supervisor, you will provide shift-based leadership and oversight of clinical operations across multiple patient care areas and departments.

You will:

• Provide clinical and administrative leadership during assigned shifts, ensuring safe, high-quality patient care across the hospital.
• Assess and respond to complex clinical, operational, and patient safety situations, exercising sound independent judgment.
• Coordinate nursing staffing across units to ensure appropriate coverage based on patient acuity, census, and operational needs.
• Partner with Nurse Leaders and the Float Pool to optimize staffing resources and address unexpected staffing challenges.
• Monitor high-risk patients and complex clinical situations and facilitate appropriate interventions and escalation.
• Support emergency preparedness and hospital response efforts, serving as a key nursing leadership resource during emergencies and unexpected events.
• Collaborate with physicians, nursing leaders, hospital administration, and interdisciplinary teams to resolve operational and patient care concerns.
• Promote a strong culture of patient safety, accountability, and clinical excellence.
• Round throughout the hospital to assess patient care needs, engage with patients and staff, and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Support patient flow by collaborating with Capacity Management, Admissions, Environmental Services, and clinical departments.
• Serve as a resource to nurses and clinical leaders, providing coaching, support, and guidance during challenging situations.
• Support regulatory, accreditation, quality, and patient safety standards.
