Clinic RN Educator

JOB SUMMARY:

The RN Clinical Educator supports the Outpatient Clinics and Clinic Managers in the delivery of clinic specific education. The Clinical Educator is responsible for developing and implementing the clinic specific orientation for new hires to include new graduates and new clinical staff and ensuring clinical nursing practice meets evidence based best practices and quality clinical outcomes. The Clinical Educator will provide clinical preceptorship and oversight of the unit's preceptors, ensuring their precepting skills are maintained. In addition, the Clinical Educator will work with the Clinic Managers on identifying and maintaining specific competency database. The Clinical Educator will work collaboratively with other unit Clinical Educators to ensure clinical education is delivered in a comprehensive and collaborative manner using current evidence and needs assessments. It is expected the Clinical Educator will maintain their clinical skills through hands on care e.g. Floating to cover Nurse functions in the clinic and would be expected to work clinically as staffing dictates. Clinical Educator also advances EMR (Meditech) training in partnership with RN Informaticist and ensures quality clinical documentation outcomes of staff and new orientees.

PRE-REQUISITES:

Education: BSN required, MSN preferred with current RN licensure in the State of Vermont required.

Experience: 5 years of nursing, clinical educator, or nursing instructor experience required. A Master’s degree in Nursing may be substituted for 2 years of required experience.

Skills: Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office. Knowledge of audiovisual equipment setup advantageous. BLS required. ACLS and PALS preferred.

RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Reports To: COO/CNO and director of operations for outpatient clinics
  • Other Contacts: Clinic Managers, Organizational Development staff, other Clinical Educators, staff, physicians, patients and their families, and the public.

SCOPE:

  • Machinery or Equipment Used: Computer, calculator, photocopier, electronic monitoring and treatment devices. Telemedicine and nursing equipment/supplies.
  • Physical Demands: Lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers patients. Pushes moves or lifts heavy equipment/supplies. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching. Prolonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking.
  • Working Conditions: Regularly exposed to the risks associated with blood-born and other infectious and contagious diseases. Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances (accidents, injuries, illness, and emergent situations). Occasionally subjected to irregular hours and unpredictable work situations. Subject to stressful environment due to multiple demands.
  • Required Protective Equipment: Includes but not limited to: gowns, masks, non-sterile and sterile medical gloves, goggles.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepares, oversees, organizes and assesses the new employee's clinical experiences and maintains communication with preceptors, managers, and new employees regarding the progress of new employees. Serves as the "on-boarding" expert for the clinics.
  • Assesses professional development needs of the clinic staff, develops educational plans, implements ongoing and regular instruction to all shifts and evaluates training effectiveness to support our goal of high reliability care and outcomes.
  • Assesses quality of patient care daily. Works with Staff nurses and clinical staff to ensure high quality care is delivered in the clinics and develops educational programming to support the promotion of clinical practice and evidence based practice, including service standards and NMC’s Must Have’s within our Five Star Caring Always program.
  • Performs clinic rounding to observe, coach and develop improvement plans for clinical Staff; just in time teaching as well as more formal training and development plans.
  • Works collaboratively with other units/departments to improve and maintain the quality of care delivered to patients throughout the institution by providing subject matter support, skills/competency assessment, and acts as a clinical resource.
  • May serve as clinical staff as unit needs demands e.g. Clinic Nurse.
  • Regularly participates in professional development through committee membership, continuing education, hospital sponsored programs. Examples include, lunch and learn activities, training drills, shared governance involvement, quality improvement initiatives, computer training or other external providers of education and training.
  • Collaborates with the Lead Clinical Educator to develop educational programs for healthcare professionals and for community members.
  • Performs direct staff education in the clinic, during mock codes/emergencies, skills labs, competency assessment, with new equipment/processes, when new or changes to policies/procedures occur, for process improvement needs, and for remediation of skills/knowledge for staff in need.
  • Acts as the preceptor for new hires in the clinics. Oversees other unit preceptors (as staff preceptors are available and deemed appropriate by clinic manager); ensures adequate preceptor knowledge, aids communication between preceptor/new hire/supervisor, seeks opportunities for new hire to gain knowledge and experience (especially with high risk, low incidence skills), encourages cross training of staff, and assists preceptors or new hires with difficult interactions.
  • Is an administrator for the electronic Learning Management System (LMS): assists in creating the coursework and schedules in the LMS, maintains records for their assigned unit, instructs staff on how to access and utilize LMS, recommends and evaluates coursework to be contained in the LMS.
  • Trains new hires on Meditech (EMR) in partnership with RN Informaticist. Ensures ongoing clinical documentation is of high quality through routine checks and audits of staff and trainees.
