Job summary

THOM Thomas Hospitals is seeking a Phlebotomist Supervisor to lead and train the phlebotomy team. You will oversee hiring, scheduling, and performance, ensuring timely specimen collection and proper LIS entry. You may coordinate health fairs and perform phlebotomy duties as needed.

The role requires several years of phlebotomy experience, strong leadership, and familiarity with office software and reporting tools. This is an on-site position with potential for varied shifts.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Ensures timely specimen collection, prioritizing STAT and ASAP orders.
• Evaluates staff for promotions, pay changes and performance.
• Identifies quality issues and documents trends for resolution.
• Ensures proper specimen handling and LIS receipt; trains staff.
• May coordinate health fairs and low-cost blood screens.
• Performs phlebotomy duties when needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

2. 2. Phlebotomy Certification.

EXPERIENCE:

1. 1. Four (4) years phlebotomy experience.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. 1. Assists with selecting and hiring employees. Completes departmental training and orientation and assigns departmental staff. Supervises and evaluates the effectiveness of employees on an ongoing basis.
2. 2. Schedules and adjusts staff to meet facility needs considering staff competency, established standards and regulatory requirements, including appropriate supervision, and wage and hour law.
3. 3. Supervises the daily duties and outcomes of the phlebotomy staff.
4. 4. Assures phlebotomy duties are completed in a time efficient manner, prioritizes STAT orders, ASAP orders, scheduled orders and outpatients. Prints, documents, and reviews pending Specimen Collection lists periodically throughout each workday.
5. 5. Provides input in the evaluation of the staff for promotions, salary adjustments, annual performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, and termination’s based on documented performance within time frames established by the institution.
6. 6. Identify and addresses outreach quality issues observing for trends and resolving issues with appropriate documentation.
7. 7. Ensures that the staff is properly trained for specimen type, proper receipt into the LIS, troubleshooting of missing samples and orders.
8. 8. May coordinates health fairs, employee screens, and low cost blood screens offered by the hospital or the lab.
9. 9. Performs the duties of a Phlebotomist as needed.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. 1. Heavy/Hard work: Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying of materials and equipment weighing 40+lbs.
2. 2. Ability to bend, stoop, reach and be capable of normal rotation, standing and walking for entire shift.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

1. 1. May require unsupervised access to restricted areas that may contain medications, supplies and patient confidential information.
2. 2. May be required to travel between facilities/buildings.
3. 3. May be scheduled to work various shifts based on departmental needs.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. 1. Ability to use a computer keyboard, monitor, mouse, and calculator.
2. 2. Ability to use computer software (PowerPoint, Word, and Excel).
3. 3. Ability to use Fax machines, printers and other office equipment.
