Clinic MA (Clinic/Surgical Practice)

Position Summary

The Clinic MA provides clinical and administrative support to surgeons and other healthcare providers in a specialty clinic setting. This position is responsible for assisting with patient flow, obtaining clinical information, performing basic clinical procedures, maintaining exam rooms, supporting patient scheduling activities, and ensuring accurate documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR). The MA serves as an important member of the healthcare team by delivering excellent patient care and contributing to efficient clinic operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Escorts patients to examination rooms and obtains vital signs, height, weight, and other relevant clinical information.
  • Prepares patients for examinations, procedures, and provider consultations.
  • Performs venipuncture and specimen collection as ordered by the provider.
  • Accurately labels, handles, and transports laboratory specimens according to established protocols.
  • Documents patient information, medical history updates, and required CMS Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) data in the EMR.
  • Assists providers during patient visits and procedures as needed.
  • Maintains examination rooms by cleaning, disinfecting, stocking supplies, and ensuring readiness for patient care.
  • Adheres to infection control, safety, and OSHA guidelines.
  • Performs back-office administrative functions, including chart preparation, scanning/fax filing into the EMR, and telephone coverage.
  • Assists with patient check-in, appointment scheduling, referral coordination, and insurance verification as needed.
  • Communicates professionally and compassionately with patients, families, providers, and staff.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives and mandatory training activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program required.

Certification

  • Current Medical Assistant certification preferred or required based on practice standards (CMA, RMA, NCMA, CCMA, or equivalent).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred.

Experience

  • Previous experience in a physician practice, specialty clinic, surgical clinic, or ambulatory care setting preferred.
  • Experience with electronic medical records (EMR) systems preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, clinical procedures, and patient care practices.
  • Ability to perform venipuncture and specimen collection accurately and safely.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Proficient with computer applications and EMR systems.
  • Demonstrates strong customer service and patient-centered care skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and sit for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate clinical equipment and perform venipuncture.
  • Visual acuity and hearing sufficient to perform required job functions.

Work Environment

  • Medical office and outpatient clinic environment.
  • Frequent interaction with patients, physicians, and healthcare staff.
  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials consistent with healthcare settings.
