Job summary

Trinity Health is seeking a full-time laboratory assistant/technician with rotating shifts to support blood collection and processing across patient ages. You will use the LIS to activate orders, process specimens, and report results under supervision.

Education and patient instruction on specimen collection are essential components of the role. The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, with training in phlebotomy or healthcare studies preferred and less than one year experience

Qualifications

  • Education: High school plus additional coursework up to 1 year.
  • Training preferred: Medical Assistant, Certified Phlebotomist, or other healthcare studies.
  • Experience: Less than 1 year experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Procure blood samples from patients across age ranges.
  • Use Laboratory Information System to activate, order, and report results.
  • Educate patients on specimen collection such as urine, stool, sputum.
  • Review orders from providers and ensure accurate test ordering.
  • Process specimens and maintain sample integrity.
  • Prepare specimens for transfer to reference labs and handle STAT transfers.
  • Perform waived and moderately complex CLIA testing under supervision.
  • Maintain temperature logs and quality control records.

  • Proficient in the procurement of blood samples via venous and capillary techniques, from patients ranging in age from infant to geriatric.

  • Utilizes use of the Laboratory Information System for activating, ordering, and resulting laboratory orders from providers and to result laboratory tests.

  • Educates patients in the proper collection of specimens such as urine, stool and sputum.

  • Reviews orders from providers, maintaining accuracy in ordering tests; occasionally must call providers' offices to obtain orders.

  • Processes specimens in the appropriate way, including looking up specimen requirements, centrifuging and separating as necessary, and storing at the appropriate temperature to maintain sample integrity and testing acceptability.

  • Readies specimens for transfer to reference laboratories, including completing the required paperwork for transfer and ensuring STAT specimens are processed and transported in a timely manner, including calling a STAT courier and completing the necessary paperwork for the transfer.

  • Performs both waived and moderately complex CLIA testing in hematology, urinalysis, and serologiy areas under the guidance and supervision of an MLT or MT.

  • Keeps accurate records, such as temperature monitoring, quality control for all laboratory testing and daily, weekly and monthly maintenance.
