Job description

SUMMARY

Work in partnership with the faculty in the Coleman College Dental Hygiene Program to provide a successful program environment for students and ensure comprehensive dental care through consultation and referral to the community it serves.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• 1. Be available for consultations and referrals and for all clinical procedures that require direct supervision as outlined in Texas Dental Practice Act.
• 2. Follow the Dental Hygiene Clinic Handbook policies and procedures and work in partnership with faculty and director to update as needed.
• 3. Provide consultation on medical histories of new and recall clients.
• 4. Authorize sealant placement.
• 5. Administer local anesthesia for clinic patients.
• 6. Perform intraoral screenings, recognizes oral pathologies and determines need for treatment referrals.
• 7. Prescribe antibiotic premedication, fluoride supplements, subgingival medicaments and other prescription products when indicated.
• 8. Work in partnership with dental hygiene faculty to authorize radiographs to meet patient's needs.
• 9. Diagnose dental decay from patient radiographs.
• 10. Provide consultation and follow-up on clinical percutaneous exposures.
• 11. Share information about students' needs, attendance and achievements with the director and other faculty members.
• 12. Assume responsibility for own continuing education by participation in workshops, seminars, regional and/or national meetings.
• 13. Attend regularly scheduled department meetings.
• 14. Participate in training, orientations and college required activities.
• 15. Assist in dental hygiene program accreditation process.
• 16. Perform other duties delegated by the Faculty Program Director of Dental Hygiene.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential duties and responsibilities listed above. The qualifications listed below are representative of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

EDUCATION

• Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) required.
• Applicant must have a current license from the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners to practice Dentistry.

EXPERIENCE

• 3 years related dental practice/work experience required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• 1. Knowledge and skill in a variety of computer usage and software are required.
• 2. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a professional, community, and student population.
• 3. Possess good organizational and planning skills.
• 4. Demonstrate sensitivity to students with different academic and socio-economic backgrounds and students with disabilities.
• 5. Able to keep skills and procedural knowledge updated with current technological advances.
