Responsibilities

General Summary

Under the supervision of the Fitness and Wellness Coordinator, the Climbing Wall Instructor is responsible for leading climbing classes, programs, birthday parties, and recreational sessions at the Hyland Hills climbing wall. This position provides safe, engaging, and inclusive instruction to individuals of various ages and skill levels, monitors climbing activities, maintains a safe and welcoming environment, and promotes participation in climbing and fitness programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead climbing wall classes, programs, birthday parties, and recreational sessions as directed by the Fitness and Wellness Coordinator.
  • Deliver safe, fun, and engaging instruction that encourages participation and skill development.
  • Provide participant orientations and explain climbing wall rules, procedures, and safety expectations.
  • Properly fit and check participant harnesses and required climbing equipment prior to use.
  • Conduct routine pre-use inspections of climbing wall equipment, including auto-belays and other safety equipment, and report any concerns immediately.
  • Continuously monitor participants while the climbing wall is in use and intervene when unsafe conditions or behaviors are observed.
  • Follow all established climbing wall safety procedures and facility policies.
  • Adapt instruction to accommodate participants of varying ages, experience levels, abilities, and needs.
  • Provide appropriate supervision and instruction for children, youth, adults, and families.
  • Maintain a positive, inclusive, and age-appropriate environment.
  • Promote upcoming classes, programs, and events to increase participation and engagement.
  • Collaborate with the Fitness and Wellness Coordinator to provide feedback and recommendations regarding program development, participant experience, and climbing wall operations.
  • Provide exceptional customer service and assist guests with questions or concerns.
  • Communicate effectively with participants, parents/guardians, and facility staff.
  • Enforce all facility rules, climbing wall policies, and participant behavior expectations.
  • Complete required climbing wall inspection, activity, and equipment logs.
  • Report facility, equipment, and safety concerns to the Fitness and Wellness Coordinator immediately.
  • Remove damaged, expired, or unsafe equipment from service in accordance with established procedures.
  • Complete incident, accident, and injury reports as required.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies and follow established emergency response procedures.
  • Assist with maintaining a clean, organized, and safe climbing wall area.
  • Set and reset climbing routes, including selecting, removing, repositioning, and installing climbing holds to maintain a safe, engaging, and appropriately challenging climbing environment.
  • Follow established procedures for requesting time off and notifying the supervisor of scheduling conflicts.
  • Maintain required certifications and complete continuing education and training as required.
  • Successfully complete Hyland Hills climbing wall training and competency evaluations.
  • Dress professionally and appropriately for a family-friendly recreation environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands, Job Location, and Equipment Utilization
  • The noise level in the environment is moderate to loud.
  • Physical demands include prolonged standing, walking, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, bending, reaching, stretching, and other physical activity associated with climbing instruction.
  • Ability to safely demonstrate basic climbing techniques and operate climbing wall equipment.
  • Ability to climb the facility's climbing wall as needed to demonstrate techniques and skills.
  • Ability to work at heights and perform duties requiring reaching, bending, stretching, and sustained physical activity.
  • Ability to respond quickly to participant safety concerns and emergency situations.
  • Visual requirements include close, distance, and peripheral vision, as well as the ability to continuously monitor multiple participants.
  • Proficient in the use of climbing wall equipment, including harnesses, auto-belays, and other applicable safety equipment.
Required Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Must pass a background check prior to employment.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification required within 60 days of hire.
  • Ability to safely demonstrate basic climbing techniques and properly operate climbing wall equipment.
  • Ability to successfully complete Hyland Hills climbing wall training and competency evaluation.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and occasional special events as program needs require.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with participants, parents/guardians, and staff.
  • Ability to provide a safe, positive, and inclusive experience for participants of all ages and abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Climbing Wall Instructor certification or equivalent climbing-specific training.
  • Previous experience teaching or instructing climbing.
  • Previous experience with climbing wall route setting or resetting preferred.
  • Previous experience working with children, youth, families, or recreational programs.
  • Previous experience in a fitness, recreation, camp, or customer service environment.
  • Knowledge of climbing wall safety, equipment inspection, and operational procedures.
