American Alpine Journal is seeking a Senior Editor for a remote, part-time contract position with The American Alpine Club. The role reports to the AAJ Editor-in-Chief and helps plan, edit, and produce the 2027 edition, the AAJ website, and e-newsletters.

Qualifications

• Extensive climbing experience and knowledge (alpinism/mountaineering).
• Commitment to AAC mission and core values at all times.
• Deep knowledge of climbing history.
• Track record in reporting and editing climbing news or related topics.
• Ability to edit longer-form articles for publication.
• Experience planning and layout in print publications with an art director.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills; can manage multiple deadlines.
• Collaborative mindset; able to work across departments and with contractors.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; works with diverse teams.
• Experience meeting deadlines and delivering polished content.
• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign), G Suite, and Slack.

Responsibilities

• Report, edit, and fact-check expedition reports.
• Edit longer articles in collaboration with climber-writers and Editor-in-Chief.
• Research for AAJ, Cutting Edge podcast, and related channels.
• Collect and prepare photos and captions for publication.
• Upload and edit online stories.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by Editor-in-Chief.
