Job summary

Monster Tree Service of Middle Tennessee is seeking a Climber/Assistant Crew Lead to join a growing tree care team. You will support the Crew Leader, supervise crew members, lead safety practices, and perform essential climbing, rigging, and ground crew duties.

The role emphasizes leadership, training, and efficiency on job sites, with a focus on safe equipment operation, ANSI standards, and customer satisfaction. Strong communication and physical stamina are required.

Qualifications

• Valid driver’s license with clean driving record.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid D.O.T. medical card.
• Proficient in ground crew and climber roles.
• Knowledge of knots, rope systems, and felling techniques.

Responsibilities

• Perform primary tree care services including pruning, removals, cabling, bracing, stump grinding, and clean-up.
• Climb trees using advanced climbing techniques and equipment.
• Assist Crew Leader in supervising crew members on job sites and act as Crew Leader when required.
• Lead safety practices and ensure proper PPE usage on site.
• Operate chainsaws, rigging equipment, and wood/log moving equipment safely.
• Monitor and ensure compliance with ANSI and industry standards.
• Safely drive and operate commercial vehicles and towed equipment.
• Interact with customers to ensure job satisfaction and manage expectations.
• Assist with basic administrative or job tracking responsibilities as required.

Functions and Responsibilities

Tree Care & Climbing Duties

• Perform all primary tree care services including pruning, removals, cabling, bracing, stump grinding, and clean-up.
• Climb trees using advanced climbing techniques and equipment.
• Conduct tree risk assessments prior to beginning work.
• Install supplemental support systems (cabling and bracing).
• Operate chainsaws, rigging equipment, and wood/log moving equipment safely and efficiently.
• Ensure all work meets ANSI and industry standards.

Leadership & Crew Support

• Assist the Crew Leader in supervising and directing crew members on job sites.
• Step in as acting Crew Leader when required.
• Help train crew members on proper techniques, safety practices, and job expectations.
• Lead by example in safety, professionalism, and work quality.
• Support daily job planning, including reviewing scope of work and identifying safety concerns.

Safety & Compliance

• Participate in and help conduct job site safety briefings.
• Ensure all crew members follow safety policies and properly use required PPE.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
• Ensure proper job site security procedures are followed.
• Monitor and enforce adherence to company and industry safety standards.

Equipment & Operations

• Ensure proper use, care, and maintenance of all tools and equipment.
• Safely operate and drive commercial vehicles and towed equipment (e.g., chipper, trailer).
• Assist in monitoring equipment condition and reporting maintenance needs.

Customer & Administrative

• Interact with customers as needed to ensure job satisfaction.
• Understand the financial aspects and productivity goals of each job.
• Communicate effectively with General Manager, Crew Leader, Sales Arborist, and management.
• Assist with basic administrative or job tracking responsibilities when required.

General Responsibilities

• Report to work on time and ready for duty each day.
• Follow directions from General Manager, Crew Leader, Sales Arborist, and management.
• Maintain clear communication with team members.
• Continuously improve skills and contribute to team development.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support business operations.

Physical Environment

• Outdoors, in all weather conditions
• Driving a Commercial Vehicle

Physical Demands

• Ability to lift 50 lbs.
• Perform moderate to high intensity physical labor 40–60 hours per week

Qualifications

• Demonstrate the ability to operate and safely drive a large commercial vehicle, (i.e. tree truck) along with towed equipment (i.e. chipper or trailer)
