Qualifications

  • Ph.D. preferred, or a Master’s degree with 3-5+ years of relevant experience in structural engineering, civil engineering, operations research, resilience engineering, catastrophe risk, or related quantitative field.
  • Structural Degree or Civil Engineering (with a structural focus).
  • Strong technical foundation in vulnerability and loss modeling, statistics, probabilistic methods, and quantitative analysis.
  • Hands-on experience developing risk, vulnerability, or loss models for buildings and infrastructure, using engineering-based approaches, statistical methods, machine learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop loss models from the ground up, including methodology, data sourcing, calibration, validation, and uncertainty.
  • Experience with multi-hazard and catastrophe risk data, exposure datasets, construction characteristics, and repair/cost data.
  • Experience developing scalable catastrophe risk models across portfolios and geographies.
  • Advanced proficiency in Python or other scientific programming languages; reproducible workflows.
  • Science-driven approach to model development emphasizing accuracy, validation, and transparency.
  • Knowledge of current resilience, vulnerability, catastrophe risk, and loss modeling literature and standards.
  • Experience applying machine learning/AI to engineering, risk, resilience modeling.
  • Experience analyzing large datasets in HPC environments and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
  • Proficiency with Git and collaborative software development practices.
  • Strong scientific publication record demonstrating rigorous technical work.

Responsibilities

  • Connect physical climate risk to financial risk by developing custom loss models for buildings and infrastructure globally.
  • Model damage, recovery, and economic impacts using engineering, cost estimation, statistics, and machine learning.
  • Turn imperfect data into actionable models by analyzing historical loss and observational data and addressing data quality issues.
  • Validate model performance and quantify uncertainty to ensure rigorous, decision-useful outputs.
  • Translate research into scalable modeling approaches by incorporating literature and methodologies into loss and resilience models.
  • Characterize the global built environment by analyzing codes, exposure data, construction practices, and regional differences.
  • Model the value of resilience and adaptation by evaluating protection measures and ROI of resilience interventions.
