Job summary

Santa Barbara News-Press seeks a Climate, Environment & Water Reporter to anchor a dedicated CEW beat across Santa Barbara County and the Central Coast. You will pursue breaking news, enterprise reporting, features, data journalism and investigations, reporting on environment, climate, water policy and related topics in an accessible, fact-based style.

This is a fully in-person role in Santa Barbara, with frequent field work, collaboration with editors and photographers, and occasional travel.

Qualifications

  • A degree in journalism or college-level journalism coursework.
  • A minimum of three years of professional reporting experience in an environmental or related beat.
  • Excellent reporting and writing skills; ability to explain complex topics clearly.
  • Proficiency in understanding, analyzing, and presenting data.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and report original stories through on-the-ground reporting.
  • Write clear, accurate, well-structured stories on deadline.
  • File breaking news quickly while maintaining accuracy and fairness.
  • Follow stories beyond the news cycle for in-depth coverage.
  • Develop long-form, investigative and explanatory features.
  • Shoot short-form vertical video for social-first stories.
  • Collaborate with editors and visual journalists to adapt reporting for platforms.
