Job description

Clientmind Recruiting is seeking a Sustainment Engineer for a rapidly growing technology company in the Greenbelt/Frederick, MD area. This role is responsible for supporting products after release, ensuring long-term performance, reliability, and manufacturability throughout the product lifecycle.

The TRX Systems’ Sustaining Engineering role involves troubleshooting process and product issues, optimizing performance, and managing obsolescence in close collaboration between the engineering and manufacturing teams. The position will lead efforts to resolve issues in production (assembly and testing) and warranty issues by driving root cause analysis and corrective action implementation across internal and supplier operations.

We seek an engineer with demonstrated intellectual curiosity and strong critical thinking skills, with a desire to learn and explore new ideas and concepts—often leading to deeper understanding and improved processes and products. This role serves as the bridge between Engineering and Production to ensure sustained performance of fielded products and support long-term reliability across the product lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities
  • Troubleshooting and Problem Solving – Identify, analyze, and resolve technical issues that arise with products or systems during the production and testing phase. Apply structured critical thinking to diagnose issues efficiently and drive resolution in collaboration cross-functionally between the engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain teams.
  • Electrical Design Review – Perform detailed review and analysis of electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and circuit documentation to support troubleshooting, test coverage improvements, and product sustainment actions.
  • CCA Troubleshooting – Diagnose circuit card assembly (CCA) failures through component-level analysis, signal tracing, and power/ground integrity checks. Use analytical reasoning to determine root cause and validate repair or rework paths.
  • Problem Analysis and Corrective Actions – Investigate quality issues and work with the manufacturing sub‑contractor, engineering, and operations teams to implement corrective actions and prevent recurrence.
  • Warranty – Work closely with cross-functional teams to perform failure analysis of warranty returns and in-process test failures, identifying and documenting systemic root causes.
  • Lifecycle Management – Plan and manage sustainment activities throughout the entire product lifecycle, from initial release to end‑of‑life.
  • Performance Optimization – Improve efficiency, reliability, and overall performance of products or systems through data analysis, electrical troubleshooting, and design or process modifications supported by sound engineering judgment.
  • Documentation and Change Management – Create and maintain technical documentation, including production drawings, schematics, and test procedures. Manage updates to product BOMs, test configurations, or system documentation.
  • Continuous Improvement – Identify opportunities for product or process enhancements and implement changes to improve performance, manufacturability, or cost-effectiveness.
  • Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) – Lead ECP/ECO initiation, documentation updates, and controlled release in alignment with internal review processes.
  • Root Cause Analysis – Lead structured investigations (8D, 5-Whys, Ishikawa, etc.) and manage containment, deviation, or rework paths based on investigation results. Partner with suppliers to drive accountability through SCARs and corrective plans; contribute to supplier qualification and risk mitigation for alternate parts.
  • Control Plans and Risk Management – Define and maintain Control Plans, FMEAs, and Inspection Plans, ensuring traceability from issue to resolution.
  • Testing – Working with engineering and operations technicians, set up, calibrate, and maintain production test equipment and fixtures. Collaborate with Engineering and sub‑contractors to ensure test coverage aligns with product performance and quality standards. Perform Gage R&R studies to validate measurement systems and maintain accuracy across inspection stations.
  • Electrical Debug and Validation – Support bench-level testing, signal probing, and controlled experiments to validate failure modes and confirm corrective actions.
Qualifications
  • U.S. Citizenship required with a Secret clearance or the ability and willingness to obtain one.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or other engineering degree with equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in Sustainment or Production Engineering, ideally in defense, aerospace, or high-reliability manufacturing environments is preferred.
  • Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to break down complex problems, evaluate evidence, challenge assumptions, and make sound engineering decisions.
  • Solid electrical engineering foundation, including experience with schematic review, circuit analysis, test equipment operation, and CCA troubleshooting.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrating the ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of individuals and echelons.
  • Demonstrated sound judgment, foresight, and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced environment.
  • This role will be approximately 60% (3 days per week) onsite in Frederick, MD at the production facility and 40% (2 days per week) onsite in Greenbelt depending on the needs of the business.
