Job summary

Lamar University in Beaumont, TX seeks a IT Support Technician to help run campus lab computing and print facilities. You will install, deploy, upgrade, and maintain software and hardware related to computing labs, and monitor student employees aiding customers.

Responsibilities include real-time assistance to faculty during classes, troubleshooting equipment, and researching solutions to improve service efficiency and reduce costs. Ability to adapt to technology changes is essential.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in information technology, computer science, or related field (2 years of education = 1 year of formal education).
  • 2 years of technical and customer-focused experience. Working knowledge of Windows, Mac OS, Microsoft Office, and printers in classroom and lab environments.

  • Provide real-time technical support for faculty during classroom and lab sessions.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose basic problems with equipment in classrooms and labs; perform minor maintenance.
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend solutions to increase efficiency and reduce cost.
  • Escalate incidents to Tier 2 support using standard procedures.
  • Follow up with customers to ensure resolution of work orders, provide feedback to IT teams.
  • Collaborate with the team to improve classroom and lab procedures and operations.

Job Summary

Support daily operation of campus lab computing and print facilities. Assist with the implementation of technologies and practices to continuously improve the effectiveness of service delivery and expand service offerings. Install, deploy, upgrade, and maintain software, and hardware as it relates to the computing lab facilities. Monitor student employees responsible for assisting customers.

Essential Job Functions
  • Install, diagnose, maintain, and repair a variety of software and hardware, including networked peripherals.
  • Provide real-time technical support for faculty during classroom and lab sessions.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose basic problems with equipment in classrooms and labs. Performs minor maintenance and repair on equipment, as necessary.
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend solutions that will increase efficiency, reduce cost, and improve service.
  • Escalate incidents and requests as appropriate to the correct Tier 2 support staff using standard procedures.
  • Follow up with customers to ensure the resolution of work orders/service tickets and pass on any feedback or suggestions to the appropriate IT teams.
  • Collaborate with the team on improving the procedures and operations of Classroom and Labs.
Minimum and Desired Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate degree in information technology, computer science, or related field or combination of education and experience in a related field (2 years of experience = 1 year of formal education).
  • 2 years of technical and customer-focused experience. Working knowledge of current operating systems including Windows, Mac OS, Microsoft Office, and printers in classroom and lab environments.
Desired Qualifications
  • Certifications such as CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, or HDI Desktop Support Technician or Support Center Analyst preferred.
Supplemental Information
Key Competencies
  • Technical knowledge of networked and stand-alone PC and MAC software, Windows registry, file systems, and basic network concepts.
  • Knowledge of basic computer troubleshooting techniques for Windows and MAC OS.
  • Ability to adapt to changing technologies and work methods with the ability to listen to customers, and quickly analyze, identify root causes, and resolve problems using creative solutions.
  • Research computer issues, technologies, and products to identify and recommend innovative solutions.
  • Take initiative and respond to time-sensitive situations that are essential, along with discretion in dealing with clients.
  • Collaborate with the team on improving the procedures and operations of the classroom and labs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships.
Physical Requirements

May be required to move and lift materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.

Job Conditions

Work is performed under direct supervision, with latitude for independent decisions. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule as needed.
