Job description

Department Overview:

Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) is Madison’s public recreation provider. MSCR offers a wide variety of athletic, recreational, arts, and enrichment activities and classes for all ages in an accessible, inclusive setting. Programs include swimming instruction, MSCR on the Move, arts & enrichment classes, youth summer camps, sports camps & clinics, adult & 50+ fitness, adult sport leagues including pickleball, softball, and tennis, and a wide variety of outdoor pursuits including paddling sports, pontoon trips, camping, orienteering, and challenge courses.

As a department of the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), MSCR also provides afterschool enrichment activities, clubs, and sports as well as summer programming in Madison elementary, middle, and high schools, Allied Learning Center, and Meadowood Neighborhood Center.

Minimum: 14 Maximum: 21

Schedule:

7 hours per shift (2 – 3 shifts per week). Maximum of one shift per day (Mondays, Wednesdays, and every other Friday). Shift times are either 7:30am - 1pm, 10am - 5:30pm, or 3pm - 9pm.

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

Minimum: $18.00 Maximum: $20.00

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Must be able to work outside in various weather conditions.
  2. Must be creative and flexible.
  3. Must be outgoing and able to engage with a diverse population.
  4. Must be proven to be reliable and able to work independently.
  5. Experience working with clay.
  6. Understands how to store, maintain, and reclaim clay for use.
  7. Proficient at throwing – centering, opening, and pulling.
  8. Comfortable demonstrating how to throw on the pottery wheel.
  9. Must be comfortable driving a 15 passenger van.
  10. Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience teaching pottery classes.
  2. Past experience working with diverse populations.
  3. Ability to communicate with Spanish speakers.

If contacted for an interview, applicants must bring a finished piece of pottery made by them and may be asked to demonstrate their throwing ability during the interview.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

  1. Drive 15 passenger van to 2-3 Madison parks each week.
  2. Collaborate with Clay on the Move coordinator to set up and implement easily adaptable clay activities in a variety of Madison parks.
  3. Organize, request, and maintain supplies.
  4. Communicate clearly with participants.
  5. Communicate openly with both Pottery Coordinator and Arts Supervisor.
  6. Create an encouraging, inclusive environment – all are welcome!
  7. Facilitate clay activities for ages 3-5, 5-8, and adults.

Physical Demands:

Ability to lift 25 lbs of supplies or equipment.
