Baltimore City Schools' Summer Arts for Learning Academy (SALA), operated by Arts for Learning Maryland, offers students an opportunity to imagine, create, and express who they are through the arts. This is a full-day, five-week program (Monday - Thursday) that introduces students to various art forms—illustration, spoken word, percussion, drama, dance—allowing them to work with professional Artists. The program culminates in a student showcase. Arts for Learning Maryland will host 6 sites across the city, locations TBD.
The mission of SALA is to provide students with summer learning experiences led by top Teachers and Teaching Artists. It fosters a creative, supportive environment where students explore math and literacy through arts integration, develop socially and emotionally, and are introduced to diverse art forms, all while experiencing content from new perspectives.
We believe all students can achieve through the arts. We aim to provide opportunities for students to develop their voices, create safe learning environments, collaborate, and reflect. We focus on critical thinking, problem solving, inquiry, and creativity, leveraging students' cultural backgrounds to make learning relevant. Our classrooms are inclusive, affirming students' identities, and addressing biases and structural racism. We view families as partners and prioritize flexible, innovative teaching approaches.
The SALA grade level Classroom Teacher ensures rigorous learning in literacy and math, co-teaching arts-integrated classes with a Teaching Artist. Teachers co-plan and co-teach one math and one literacy class daily, leading a morning SQUAD session. Ideal candidates hold a current teaching certification, are flexible, relationship-oriented, interested in arts integration, committed to inclusivity, and able to engage families regularly. Staff must be active throughout the program day, able to supervise students outside the classroom, and capable of lifting up to 20 lbs.
Teachers must attend training and program days, tentative dates include asynchronous training before May 30, spring training in April/May, program from June 30 to July 31, 2025, and weekly planning meetings. The program runs Monday-Thursday, 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM, with a full-day commitment. Partial day positions are no longer available.
Hourly rate: $53.18, with professional development sessions paid at $30/hour. The position is temporary, non-exempt, without health benefits, but Sick and Safe Leave is available.
Applicants should be prepared for active work, including standing, supervision, and light lifting. Arts for Learning Maryland is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to diversity and inclusion. We encourage applications from all backgrounds.
