About The Summer Arts For Learning Academy

Baltimore City Schools' Summer Arts for Learning Academy (SALA), operated by Arts for Learning Maryland, offers students an opportunity to imagine, create, and express who they are through the arts. This is a full-day, five-week program (Monday - Thursday) that introduces students to various art forms—illustration, spoken word, percussion, drama, dance—allowing them to work with professional Artists. The program culminates in a student showcase. Arts for Learning Maryland will host 6 sites across the city, locations TBD.

Job Description

SALA Classroom Teacher Job Description

The SALA grade level Classroom Teacher ensures rigorous learning in literacy and math, co-teaching arts-integrated classes with a Teaching Artist. Teachers co-plan and co-teach one math and one literacy class daily, leading a morning SQUAD session. Ideal candidates hold a current teaching certification, are flexible, relationship-oriented, interested in arts integration, committed to inclusivity, and able to engage families regularly. Staff must be active throughout the program day, able to supervise students outside the classroom, and capable of lifting up to 20 lbs.

Job Responsibilities
  • Create a positive classroom culture aligned with SALA's mission and values.
  • Build relationships with students, staff, and families.
  • Complete all required paperwork and documentation.
  • Engage families and support final student showcases.
  • Collaborate with external partners and support field trips.
  • Support fitness & fun activities twice weekly.
  • Provide reports and administer evaluations.
  • Follow health and safety protocols.
Specific Responsibilities
  • Lead daily 30-minute SQUAD meetings.
  • Serve as lead for two daily arts-integrated classes.
  • Partner with Teaching Artists to deliver content.
  • Support arts explorations and field trips.
  • Provide individual student support and mentorship.
Required Dates, Times, and Working Hours

Teachers must attend training and program days, tentative dates include asynchronous training before May 30, spring training in April/May, program from June 30 to July 31, 2025, and weekly planning meetings. The program runs Monday-Thursday, 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM, with a full-day commitment. Partial day positions are no longer available.

Compensation

Hourly rate: $53.18, with professional development sessions paid at $30/hour. The position is temporary, non-exempt, without health benefits, but Sick and Safe Leave is available.
