Classroom Teacher

POSITION: Biology Teacher (Classroom)

TERM: Eleven month work year

REPORTS TO: Supervisor of Curriculum & Instruction

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid New Jersey Instructional Certificate.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective teaching methods and developmentally appropriate classroom activities.
  • Ability to maintain a positive learning environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in use of educationally appropriate technology.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Provide academic instruction to students.
  • Implement student IEP requirements.
  • Establish a class environment that fosters learning and personal growth.
  • Help students develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for continued education.
  • Maintain good relationships with parents and other staff members.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Perform instructional duties in a professional manner, including:
    1. Developing weekly lesson plans and instructional materials.
    2. Adapting the curriculum to the needs of each student.
    3. Effecting lesson plans through presentation to achieve objectives.
    4. Ensuring class activities and lesson presentations are age-appropriate and meet the individual needs, interests, and ability levels of all students.
    5. Setting specific objectives wherever possible in lesson preparation and weekly lesson plans.
    6. Devising written and oral assignments, tests, and other related assessments that require analytical and critical thinking.
    7. Maintaining records of students’ educational progress in class record books, electronic-digital grade books, and parent portal; summarizing marks for reporting purposes.
    8. Developing proficiency in the school grading system.
    9. Preparing grades, report cards, and progress reports.
    10. Utilizing functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and learning centers to create an effective environment for learning.
    11. Providing extra help to students.
  2. Provide specialized instructional need to address students’ disabilities, including:
    1. Implementing student IEPs.
    2. Implementing the Behavior Intervention/Modification Plans.
    3. Assessing pupil academic progress and personal growth toward stated objectives of instruction.
    4. Identifying student needs and cooperating with other professional staff members in assessing and resolving learning problems.
    5. Providing individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
    6. Establishing and maintaining standards of student behavior to achieve classroom climate conducive to learning.
    7. Communicating with parents about the school program and to discuss student progress.
  3. Exercising authority in the classroom, including supervising Instructional Aide/Assistant.
  4. Supporting student transition, including writing college/private school recommendations.
  5. Supporting non-academic programs of the school, including supervising students in out-of-classroom activities as assigned and chaperoning class trips.
  6. Enhancing educational environment and opportunities available at the schools, including participating in school-level planning, staff meetings/committees, and other school system groups.
  7. Maintaining and enhancing professional competency, including maintaining professional competence and continuous improvement through in-service education and other professional growth activities.
  8. Upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and Board policy.
  9. Maintaining a positive attitude and professional demeanor.
  10. Collaborating with other professional staff members to elicit the very best from students.
  11. Being punctual and prepared for all meetings.
  12. Performing other duties as assigned by Supervisor of Curriculum & Instruction.

EVALUATION: At least once annually by Supervisor of Curriculum & Instruction
