Job summary

Brown University Health is seeking an individual to assist the Special Education Teacher in implementing effective academic and social-emotional programming for students. The role includes helping with daily life activities and collecting data on their functioning.

The ideal candidate will have a degree in education or a related field and some experience working with children. This is a per diem position based in Wakefield, Rhode Island, focusing on supporting students in need.

Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate degree preferred with a major in education or a related human-service field.
  • Basic knowledge of data entry/management programs such as Microsoft Excel.
  • Bradley Hospital Safety Care Certification.
  • Prior experience working with children is helpful.
  • Ability to work independently within department policies and practices.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students with activities of daily life such as toileting and other forms of self-care.
  • Collect and manage data on social-emotional and behavioral functioning.
  • Prepare and present reports on students' functioning.
  • Provide academic support to students as directed by the classroom teacher.
  • Utilize de-escalation techniques during crisis situations.

Job description

Summary

In collaboration with the classroom team, the assistant is responsible for helping the Special Education Teacher implement effective academic and social‑emotional programming for assigned students. Responsibilities
  • Consistently apply the corporate values of respect, honesty and fairness and pursue excellence in improving the health status of the region’s people within a comprehensive integrated academic health system.
  • Assist in the formulation and implementation of social‑emotional and behavioral programming consistent with students’ IEPs.
  • Assist students with activities of daily life such as toileting and other forms of self‑care.
  • Collect and manage data on social‑emotional and behavioral functioning for assigned students.
  • Prepare and present verbal and/or written reports on social‑emotional and behavioral functioning for assigned students.
  • Assist in implementing the academic and social‑emotional curricula as directed by the classroom teacher and team leader.
  • Provide academic support to students as directed by the classroom teacher.
  • Prepare and submit required paperwork for student records.
  • Attend and participate in classroom team meetings, supervisory sessions, staff meetings, and other student‑related meetings as assigned.
  • Observe all Bradley Schools policies, rules and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as required, assigned, or directed.
  • Utilize de‑escalation techniques taught by LSS to minimize the need for physical intervention and remain calm during crisis situations by making quick, rational decisions that prioritize immediate student care needs.
  • Participate in the physical management of students, including safe body positioning, blocking or deflecting potential aggression, and physically holding struggling students using approved methods for extended periods of time.
  • Lift up to fifty pounds, reach, grasp, hold, bend/squat/kneel, and escort students who may become combative for short distances.
  • Run occasionally for short distances and stand, walk, and sit frequently.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate degree preferred with a major in education or a related human‑service field.
  • Basic knowledge of data entry/management programs such as Microsoft Excel. Excel training will be provided to those who do not possess this background.
  • Bradley Hospital Safety Care Certification.
  • Prior experience working with children is helpful.
  • Ability to work independently within department policies and practices.
  • Capability to refer specific complex problems to a supervisor for clarification of departmental policies and procedures.

None.

Pay Range

$19.03 – $31.39 per hour.
