Over-the Road Driver vs. Local Driver :

Choosing a driving job that allows you to be home every night versus being an over-the road (OTR) driver comes with several distinct benefits. Here are some advantages of being a local driver, rather than an OTR driver :

  • Local drivers avoid long stretches away from home, which can lead to isolation and fatigue.
  • Local drivers typically maintain a more regular sleep schedule, promoting better overall health.
  • Sleep in your own bed, one of the major benefits is being able to sleep in your own bed every night, avoiding the discomfort of hotel stays or sleeping in the truck.
  • Local drivers can maintain a more active social life, as they spend more time in their home community. They can attend social gatherings, events, or even run errands after work.
  • Local driving positions tend to have more stable hours and predictable workdays, which may reduce the uncertainty that comes with OTR work, such as irregular routes or extended hours.
  • Being home more regularly allows for easier access to medical care, such as doctor’s appointments or physical therapy, helping drivers maintain their health over the long term.
