Job Description

This position requires a professional who takes pride in their uniform/appearance, exudes confidence, possesses an empathetic and caring demeanor, and understands the necessary balance on a college campus between collaborative constructive dialogue and enforcement related to safety and security.

The position reports to the Claremont McKenna College Executive Director of Public Safety and Emergency Management, and is responsible for supplementing existing safety and security efforts of the Campus Safety Department for all 7 of the Claremont Colleges in Claremont, California. The Claremont McKenna College (CMC) Public Safety Department takes the lead on all issues relating to safety and security at CMC. This position will be permanently assigned to Claremont McKenna College, responsible as a consummate professional, to ensure and promote a safe, secure and service-oriented environment for students, faculty, staff, alumni and visitors to the college, consistent and compliant with all current federal, state and local regulations, to include CMC and Allied Universal standards, policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Uniformed Patrol-Customer Service Extraordinaire
  2. Proactively conducts footbeats on Claremont McKenna College (CMC)
  • Interfaces with faculty, administration and students
  • Answers questions/assists students, faculty, staff, alumni and visitors
  • Acts as a first line ambassador for the college
  • Identifies security/safety deficiencies/vulnerabilities
  • Responds to dispatched radio calls to include suspicious circumstances, medical emergencies, criminal activity and other safety/security incidents
  • Observes and reports/takes immediate action if urgency required
    • Clearly communicates with/directs subjects in violation of campus policy and existing applicable state and federal law
    • Articulately provides incident details to responding safety/law enforcement partners in accordance with MOUs/Post Orders
    • Effects private persons arrests in accordance with state and federal law
  • Provides recommendations/expertise to on-call Deans/RAs
  • Gathers information and facts
    • Interviews involved persons
    • Conducts area search for witnesses, recovery evidence/information
    • Photographs incident scene and retains for incident follow-up
    • Takes photos, secures/processes evidentiary items based on policy
  • Completes detailed, timely and accurate written reports
    • Collects all relevant incident information-initiates information sharing/dissemination if relevant
  • Testifies in court proceedings
  • Acts as safety escorts on CMC campus
  • Provides safety and security at special events/student gatherings
  • Educates/trains students in crime prevention/personal safety measures
  • QUALIFICATIONS:

    To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or experience required.     1. High School diploma required, with minimum two-year degree or professional certification highly desired.
    2. Prior security/public safety experience is highly recommended, preferably in a college campus setting; experience in other service related industries, law enforcement and/or military highly desired.
    3. Energetic and focused personality with a demonstrated ability to take initiative, successfully handle and prioritize multiple competing assignments and effectively manage deadlines.
    4. Outstanding verbal and written communication skills required with the ability to successfully interact at all levels of the organization and with the general public, while continually functioning as an effective professional and team player.
    5. Must display exceptional quality customer service and communication skills.
    6. Must be able to display a healthy balance of empathy and assertiveness, to ensure the overall emotional/physical safety of students at Claremont McKenna College.
    7. Professional, articulate and able to use good independent judgment and discretion. Must have proven ability to maintain correspondence, discussions and materials in the strictest confidence, in compliance with the FERPA Act and AUS-CMC policy.
    8. Must be proficient and fully functional in Microsoft Office applications; possess intermediate computer skills to utilize innovative, wireless technology at client specific sites, as well monitor and review existing camera surveillance systems.
    9. Must be able to frequently prepare written/type-written reports, logs and other correspondence in a thorough/detailed, yet succinct manner.
    10. Provide crime prevention/security education via training/safety tips dissemination.
    11. Must be able to work overtime as needed.
    12. Remain flexible to ever changing environments; adapt well to varying situations.
    13. Must be able to read, understand and display proficiency for all Post Orders.
    14. As a condition of employment, employee must successfully complete a background investigation and a post-offer/pre-employment drug/alcohol test.
    15. As a condition of continued employment, employee must maintain current active status of all required License at all times, and must carry the license at all times while on duty.
    16. Must have ability to maintain satisfactory attendance and punctuality standard.
    17. Display a sharp, professional appearance; exudes confidence and approachability.
    18. Ability to calmly/efficiently address both common/crisis situations at the client site.
    19. Read, understand and clearly speak English; constantly use speech and hearing (correctable to normal level required) communicating with public/co-workers, giving/receiving instructions, using telephonic and radio communication devices.
    20. Must be able to handle pressures of working with high volume general public, faculty and students (constantly to occasionally depending on assignment/shift).
    21. Current state driver’s license, clean driving record (no points in prior 3 years), minimum level of insurance as required by Company policy, and ability to safely operate a vehicle required.
    22. Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Guard License for California (BSIS)
    23. Must be able to successfully complete OC/Pepper Spray, Baton, handcuffing, MOAB, CPR/AED, Higher Education training (Title IX, Clery Act), to include on-site training unique to Claremont McKenna College.

    PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

    1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use both hands, is frequently required to stand, sit, stoop, talk and hear (communicate verbally in person and via regular telephone equipment), and must be able to read computer screens, correspondence and reports in English.
    2. The employee must stand or walk constantly (for up to an entire shift) on various surfaces, reach with both hands and arms, and must be able to drive a vehicle. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
    3. Constant use of both hands and arms in reaching/handling/grasping while using phone, notepad, writing reports, and other administrative tasks.
    4. Climb stairs, ramps, or ladders occasionally during shift; required to run as needed.
    5. Occasionally bend/twist at waist/knees/neck to perform various duties.
    6. The ambient noise level is generally average, consisting of normal conversations, however is on a college campus, where employees may be assigned to or respond to incidents such as loud parties or civil disobedience where sound could be elevated.
    7. The employee must be able to concentrate on details, work under deadline pressures, apply sound logic and judgment, and prioritize tasks and responsibilities.
    8. Must be able to focus and multi-task in a busy environment, with the ability to successfully handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
    9. Possess ability to effectively manage/lead multiple employees with diverse personalities and backgrounds, motivating them to perform at optimum levels.
    10. Must be able to clearly speak, read and write English.
    11. Constant mental alertness and attention to detail required while setting priorities and following up on assignments
    12. Work in various elements including adverse outdoor conditions (cold, rain or heat).
    13. Must wear required safety equipment (ballistic vest, Sam Browne/relevant leather gear, handcuffs, OC spray, baton and portable two way radio.
    14. Must be willing/able to provide first aid until the arrival of paramedics
    15. Must be willing/able to effect a private persons arrest, in compliance with state/federal laws to safeguard persons on the CMC campus, and adjacent properties, consistent with existing Memorandums of Understanding.

    Uniforms and Training:

    • Full and complete uniforms/equipment will be provided.

    • Training will be provided on and off-site to ensure officers are certified and confident in their duties.

    Compensation:

    $22 per hr.
