Job summary

Markel Group in the United States seeks a Claims Examiner to resolve average complexity, low to mid exposure claims. You will investigate, evaluate, negotiate and settle claims, review policy coverage, draft letters, and set reserves within authority, while maintaining customer-focused service throughout the lifecycle.

Must have or be eligible for a claims license and possess related designations. Expect collaboration with a team, travel as needed, and opportunities for professional growth.

Responsibilities

  • Resolves average complexity, low to mid exposure claims.
  • Investigates, evaluates, negotiates and settles assigned claims.
  • Confirms coverage by reviewing policies and support documents.
  • Drafts coverage position letters independently.
  • Coordinates investigations into loss facts and damages.
  • Sets reserves within authority or makes recommendations to manager.
  • Uses diary system to ensure timely processing and closure.
  • Negotiates settlements with claimants and prepares case reports.
  • Participates in special projects and supports team members.
  • Provides timely service throughout the claim lifecycle per policy.

This position will be responsible for the resolution of claims of average complexity and low to mid exposure claims. The primary purpose of this job is to investigate, evaluate, negotiate and settle assigned claims by collecting and analyzing data according to policy application and/or contract provisions. The position will have responsibility for decision making within their authority and work under the general direction from their manager.Job ResponsibilitiesTypically handles low to moderate low exposure claims.Confirms coverage of claims by reviewing policies and documents submitted in support of claims. Analyzes coverage and communicates coverage positions.Drafts coverage position letters independentlyUtilizes acceptable investigation claims handling and settlement techniques that achieve cost effective and timely closure results by obtaining, reviewing and analyzing documentation, policy provisions and other records.Conducts, coordinates, and directs investigation into loss facts and extent of damagesEvaluates information on coverage, liability, and damages to determine the extent of insured's exposureSets reserves within authority or makes recommendations concerning reserve changes to managerUtilizes diary system to pro-actively resolve outstanding issues and to ensure timely processing and closure of the claim.Negotiates and settles claims directly with claimantPrepares reports by collecting and summarizing informationParticipates in special projects or assists other team members as requestedProvides timely service throughout the life cycle of the claim by meeting all service level agreements, initiating timely contact to all appropriate parties, and responding to incoming inquiries according to company policy and procedures.Identifies subrogation opportunities and fraud potential and makes appropriate referralsStrong emphasis on customer service to both internal and external customersEducation and Certification:Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experienceAdvanced degree, or focused technical degree a plusMust have or be eligible to receive claims adjuster licenseSuccessful completion of basic insurance courses or achievement of industry designation (INS, IEA, AIC, ARM, SCLA, CPCU)Work ExperienceMinimum of two years of claims handling experience or equivalent combination of education and experienceKnowledge of insurance industry or claims handling preferred, orSuccessful completion of two years as an Associate Claims Specialist preferred.Qualifications:Excellent written and oral communication skillsStrong analytical and problem-solving skillsStrong organization and time management skillsIntermediate skills in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Outlook, Power Point, Word)Ability to work in a team environmentStrong desire for continuous improvementAbility to travel to industry conferences or meetings, if required.US Work AuthorizationUS Work Authorization required.
