Job summary

Investors Title Insurance Company in Chapel Hill, NC (hybrid) is seeking a Claims Counsel to join our Claims team. You will handle complex title insurance claims from investigation through resolution, and provide strategic legal guidance on litigation matters.

Collaborate with internal partners and outside counsel, analyze policy coverage, pursue recovery opportunities, and help identify claim trends to improve underwriting and risk management.

Qualifications

  • Must have a Juris Doctor and be in good standing to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Four or more years of legal experience in law firms, corporate legal departments, insurers, or related environments, or two+ years in direct title insurance claims or underwriting.
  • Knowledge of real estate law, title insurance, closings, foreclosures, collections, bankruptcy, litigation, or related areas.
  • Strong research, analytical, writing, negotiation, and organizational abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate, evaluate, and manage title insurance claims from assignment through resolution.
  • Analyze policy coverage, conduct legal research, and develop practical claim-resolution strategies.
  • Prepare coverage analyses, claim correspondence, settlements, and other legal documents.
  • Communicate with insureds, claimants, agents, attorneys, regulators, and other stakeholders.
  • Determine when outside counsel should be retained and provide strategic direction on litigation.
  • Review pleadings, settlement proposals, budgets, invoices, and litigation strategy.
  • Identify and pursue recovery, subrogation, indemnity, and reimbursement opportunities.
  • Identify claim trends and provide feedback to support underwriting and risk management.
  • Assist with legal research, procedures, training materials, and other departmental projects.

We're looking for a Claims Counsel to join our Claims team. This role offers the opportunity to handle complex title insurance claims from investigation through resolution, provide strategic legal guidance on litigation matters, and work closely with internal business partners and outside counsel. You'll help resolve challenging title issues, pursue recovery opportunities, and identify claim trends that support stronger underwriting and risk management practices.

What We’re Looking For
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction in good standing.
  • Four or more years of legal experience in a law firm, corporate legal department, insurance company, or related environment, or two or more years of direct title insurance claims or underwriting experience.
  • Knowledge of real estate law, title insurance, real estate closings, foreclosures, collections, bankruptcy, litigation, or related practice areas.
  • Strong legal research, analytical, writing, negotiation, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to analyze complex legal and factual issues and develop practical, cost-effective claim resolution strategies.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to build relationships across internal teams and external partners.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn claims management and other business systems.
  • Public speaking or training experience is a plus.
