We cover counties, cities, townships, villages, police departments, prisons, fire departments and more. We serve the growing insurance and risk management needs of medium and large governmental entities and provide property and casualty insurance coverages in multiple states.

Role Overview

The Tokio Marine HCC - Public Risk Group is seeking a self-motivated Claims Attorney to join our growing Claims Department and handle litigated and non-litigated claims primarily arising under Auto and General Liability, as well as potentially some Law Enforcement, Public Officials, and Employment Practices liability policies in various jurisdictions.

If you are looking to enhance your legal career and/or insurance industry experience in a fast-paced, ever-expanding insurance company, we have an exciting opportunity to join our Casualty Claims team.

Key Responsibilities

This position involves interpretation of coverage and requires collaboration with outside counsel in analyzing and resolving claims within designated limits of authority. This includes investigation, analysis of liability and damages exposure, drafting and issuance of coverage position letters, and development of strategies for resolution of litigated and non-litigated claims. The Claims Attorney is also responsible for determination of probable loss exposure and establishment of reserves, as well as maintenance of claim files and documents in accordance with Company policy and procedure. You will be able to navigate the claims systems and begin handling claims of limited complexity and exposure.
  • Build confidence and be proficient in insured/broker communications: During the first 60 to 90 days, you will develop confidence in contacting insureds, performing independent investigations, and communicating the Company’s coverage position. You will manage litigated and non-litigated claims as well as develop action plans for Reserving and Resolution opportunities. You will be handling all aspects of a growing inventory of claims while working more independently.
  • Obtain Adjusting License: You will be expected to obtain all necessary adjusting licenses within approximately 180 days (or within timeframe directed by management) of your employment.
  • Develop independent working environment: Within 6 months, you will work independently drafting your own coverage letters, completing authority requests when needed, and settling claims as appropriate within authority with limited management oversight.
