Job Description

This is the intermediate level of the claim handler career path. Exercise progressively more discretion in providing prompt, cost-effective, and efficient examination, investigation, and settlement of 1st party commercial property insurance claims for excess and surplus lines and admitted policies. Provide informed coverage analysis and settle claims within authority.

Responsibilities/Tasks

  1. Evaluate commercial property claim coverage and determine the scope of damages.
  2. Adjust a caseload of assigned files in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  3. Conduct prompt, thorough, and fair investigations by obtaining relevant facts and expert input (as appropriate) to determine cause and extent of damages.
  4. Assign, direct, and handle property losses through the use of Independent Adjusters and other experts and vendors as appropriate.
  5. Maintain an active diary on caseload. Each file requires a plan of action.
  6. Adhere to assigned authority limits for reserving and payments (including settlements).
  7. Be technically proficient in all aspects of claim handling, gaining necessary knowledge and expertise from previous experience.
  8. Proficient in writing position letters (Reservation of Rights and Declination, detailed settlement letters).
  9. Have knowledge of local codes, laws, standards, and case law.
  10. Provide timely customer service.
  11. Identify and thoroughly investigate all possible recovery and subrogation opportunities in the claims, taking necessary steps for recovery if applicable.
  12. Ensure claims are handled effectively and cost-efficiently.
  13. Determine scope of damages using Xactimate and/or vendor and IA estimates.
  14. Utilize experts such as structural engineers, building consultants, cause and origin investigators, and other specialized vendors as appropriate.
  15. Establish and maintain positive working relationships through effective communication with internal and external customers.
  16. Assist in mentoring team members.

Employment Qualifications

Education or Equivalent Experience: Bachelor’s degree in a related field or relevant combination of education and experience. Continuous learning is required. Certification or progress toward certification is highly encouraged.

Experience: Three years of commercial property experience preferred. Experience handling claims in multiple jurisdictions is a plus. Bilingual skills are preferred. Alternatively, one year of AF Group Claims Representative I experience handling complex claims.

Working Conditions

Primarily in an office setting with minimal travel. Must be able to drive and have a valid license. Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, color vision, and focus adjustment. Frequent handling of documents and communication is expected.

The qualifications listed are minimums for performing the job duties.

Pay range: $55,300 - $92,600, based on various factors including skills, experience, and location.
