Job description

The Civilian Paramedic performs advanced life support (ALS) assessment, treatment, and transport of sick and injured patients in accordance with Florida Statutes, Florida Administrative Code, the Ocoee Fire Department's Medical Director Protocols, and department policies. The position is responsible for providing compassionate, high-quality prehospital emergency medical care while operating safely and effectively as part of an integrated emergency response system.

The salary for this position includes built-in FLSA overtime compensation based on the department's assigned work schedule.

Expected start date will be on or after October 12, 2026

  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency requests for service.
  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments and develop appropriate treatment plans.
  • Provide Advanced Life Support (ALS) interventions including medication administration, intravenous and intraosseous access, cardiac monitoring, electrical therapies, advanced airway management, and other procedures authorized by the Medical Director.
  • Perform and interpret 12-lead ECGs and recognize life-threatening cardiac dysrhythmias.
  • Administer oxygen therapy and manage patient airways utilizing approved equipment and techniques.
  • Package, extricate, lift, move, and transport patients safely.
  • Provide compassionate patient care while maintaining professionalism during stressful and emotionally challenging situations.
  • Safely operate ambulances and emergency vehicles in both emergency and non-emergency modes in accordance with Florida law and department policy.
  • Maintain ambulances, medical equipment, medications, and supplies in a constant state of readiness.
  • Maintain accountability and security of controlled substances and department-issued equipment.
  • Complete accurate electronic patient care reports and all required documentation before the end of each shift.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and clinical reviews.
  • Assist with the orientation and training of new personnel and EMS students when assigned.
  • Participate in continuing education, skills verification, drills, and mandatory department training.
  • Support disaster response, special events, community outreach programs, and department initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with hospitals, first responders, public safety agencies, and the public.
  • Perform other duties as assigned consistent with the mission of the Ocoee Fire Department.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Current Florida Paramedic License.
  • Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR Certification.
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Valid Florida Driver License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • FEMA IS-100,IS-200,IS-700, and IS-800 certifications, or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • Two years of paramedic experience or related experience preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of current ALS standards, medical protocols, and emergency patient care.
  • Knowledge of emergency vehicle operations and scene safety.
  • Ability to make rapid clinical decisions using sound judgment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional during high-stress incidents.
  • Ability to effectively use cardiac monitors, ventilatory equipment, infusion devices, and electronic patient care reporting systems.
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships with coworkers, hospital staff, allied agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to work independently while functioning effectively within a team environment.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements.
