Job summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking an Engineering Intern in Orlando to support Transmission & Distribution projects. You will assist lead engineers with design tasks, data entry, and documentation, and participate in continuous improvement efforts.

A strong academic record and active campus involvement are preferred, along with ABET-accredited program enrollment. We value self-motivation, quick learning, and the ability to work with standard engineering practices.

Qualifications

  • Pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering or related field.
  • ABET accreditation preferred.
  • Prior internship or related consulting experience is a plus.
  • Active campus or community involvement is preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist lead engineers with project duties and design tasks.
  • Perform tasks using standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Update and correct designs; support data entry and documentation.
  • Participate in market-specific project activities (Transmission & Distribution).
  • Research solutions and present viable options to project concerns.
  • Support ad hoc projects as assigned by managers.

A Brief Overview

Our Engineering Interns are responsible for performing tasks requiring the application of standard engineering techniques and procedures. This includes standard design of engineering systems, correcting and updating designs, assisting lead engineers with various project duties, and other duties as assigned. Specific assignments and project work vary depending on the market segments. Please see below for information on each market:

Transmission & Distribution

The Transmission & Distribution group is responsible for the planning and design of electrical transmission projects in power delivery, including overhead transmission, underground transmission, distribution systems, substation design, telecommunication & network engineering, pipelines, renewable power integration, security, grid modernization and more.

  • Assist with tasks that may include filing, scanning, data entry, documentation and Power Point presentation.

  • Assist with responses to general questions.

  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts by collecting and analyzing data.

  • Present solutions to concerns.

  • Research solutions to project concerns; analyze and recommend solutions to problems.

  • Assist with ad hoc projects as assigned by managers.

  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.

  • Involvement on campus or in the community preferred.

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship) in the country where this position is located.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications
  • Pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field from a recognized, accredited program required.

  • ABET accreditation strongly preferred.

  • Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.

  • Actively involved in campus, community or other volunteer activities or organizations.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.

  • Basic knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office programs, including, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills.

  • Self-motivated and eager learner, aptitude to grow and develop within the field.
