Hanson Professional Services Inc. is seeking a full-time Civil Site/Ports Designer in our offices located in St. Louis, MO; St. Charles, MO; Kansas City, MO; Indianapolis, IN; Springfield, IL; Peoria, IL; McHenry, IL; Nashville, TN; or Minneapolis, MN.

Position Profile

This role involves working as part of multidisciplinary design teams to plan and execute infrastructure projects for clients, primarily related to inland ports, river terminals, multimodal freight facilities, and industrial site development. Responsibilities include market and feasibility studies, planning and design of new or redeveloped multimodal facilities, and infrastructure reconstruction and rehabilitation, such as in-river and riverfront structures, roads, rail, utilities, culverts, and stormwater systems. The candidate must be capable of serving as a key project team member, developing designs, and providing direction to CADD/technician staff in civil and site design areas, including river infrastructure, rail and roadways, site grading, stormwater, utilities, and coordinating with agencies and railroads. The ability to handle multiple projects, take direction from various project managers, and coordinate with staff is essential.

A Day in the Life of a Civil Designer at Hanson

Here's what you might do in this role:

  1. Support design development for port authorities and industrial clients nationwide.
  2. Prepare and review technical documents and complex design calculations.
  3. Develop construction documents for infrastructure projects such as docks, roads, utilities, culverts, and stormwater systems.
  4. Collaborate with project managers on scope, schedule, budget, and deliverables.
  5. Work with clients to deliver cost-effective, buildable projects on time and within budget.
  6. Provide technical support across Hanson departments.
  7. Review contractor submittals and observe construction to ensure compliance with plans and specs.
  8. Engage with clients to discuss projects and delivery strategies.
  9. Participate in proposals, statements of qualifications, and business development activities.
  10. Coordinate with project managers and staffing to track project backlog and needs.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications for Success
Technical Skills:
  • Experience with AutoCAD/Civil3D preferred.
  • Experience with Microstation, PowerGeopak, Inroads (OpenRoads Connect or SS4), or willingness to learn AutoCAD/Civil3D.
Soft Skills:
  • Strong oral communication and technical writing skills.
  • Aspiring for growth and future leadership roles.
  • Ability to translate scope into clear, cost-effective deliverables.
  • Excellent relationship-building skills with staff, clients, and agencies.
  • Interest in inland ports, river terminals, freight facilities, and industrial development.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's in civil engineering or related field required.
  • 0-10 years of civil engineering experience, especially in site development.
  • Experience with ports, river terminals, rail, or roads is a plus.
  • FE exam passed or scheduled before graduation.
  • PE license or AICP certification is a plus.
