Job description

Help shape rail and transit infrastructure across the region. STV’s Transportation South team is seeking an experienced Track Engineer with 5–10 years of experience to play a key role in the design and delivery of freight rail and transit projects. This position offers the opportunity to lead track design assignments, coordinate across disciplines, engage directly with clients and rail stakeholders, and mentor junior staff while working alongside an experienced transportation team.

Why STV:

Work on complex, meaningful rail and transit projects that improve mobility, safety, and connectivity for the communities we serve.

Take ownership of challenging track design assignments and contribute to projects from planning and conceptual design through final design and construction.

Expand your technical and leadership capabilities by working alongside experienced rail professionals and multidisciplinary teams on a variety of freight rail and transit projects.

Build relationships with railroads, transit agencies, contractors, and other transportation clients while helping solve real‑world design, operational, and constructability challenges.

Mentor junior engineers and designers while continuing to grow toward technical leadership and project management roles.

What You’ll Do:
  • Support rail and civil design efforts, including rail alignments, at-grade crossings, rail corridor drainage, and special track elements.
  • Use design and drafting tools such as MicroStation and OpenRail to develop project deliverables.
  • Participate in project meetings, support follow-up items, and help keep work moving forward.
  • Lead track design efforts for freight rail, commuter rail, and transit projects, including horizontal and vertical alignments, track geometry, at-grade crossings, special trackwork, grading, and corridor drainage.
  • Develop and oversee production of track plans, profiles, cross sections, details, specifications, calculations, and construction documents from conceptual design through final design.
  • Coordinate track design with survey, drainage, roadway, structures, utilities, signals, systems, and other disciplines to identify and resolve design conflicts.
  • Perform and review design documentation, quantities, cost estimates, reports, and technical memoranda.
  • Support project managers with scope, schedule, budget, design coordination, and technical decision‑making for track‑related work.
  • Support projects during construction by responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, evaluating field conditions, and helping resolve track‑related design issues.
What You’ll Bring:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. PE license preferred.
  • Proficiency in Bentley Design Software (OpenRail, InRail, Microstation) and familiarity with other drafting software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D).
  • Strong working knowledge of railroad and transit track design principles, criteria, and industry practices.
  • Demonstrated experience developing track plans, profiles, cross sections, details, and construction documents from conceptual through final design.
  • Experience supporting design calculations, quantity development, cost estimates, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Ability to independently perform track design assignments while working under the direction of a project manager or senior technical lead.
  • Experience with freight railroad, commuter rail, light rail, or passenger rail projects preferred.
  • Strong communication skills and a team‑oriented approach to working with clients, stakeholders, and project teams.
  • Strong attention to detail and practical understanding of constructability, railroad operations, and maintaining service during construction.
  • Curiosity, attention to detail, and a desire to continue learning in a project‑driven environment.
