Job summary

The City of Duluth is seeking a Temporary Engineering Technician to support the damage prevention team in locating utilities and handling GIS/survey tasks. The role requires preparing plans, bidding docs, and coordinating with contractors to ensure public infrastructure projects meet standards.

Candidate will gather surveys, operate GPS/GIS tools, and assist in bridge safety inspections, while maintaining detailed records and communicating with the public and City staff.

Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in Civil Engineering Technology or related field with 2 years of related experience, or 4 years of related education/experience.
  • Must possess a valid Minnesota Class D driver's license or privilege.
  • MnDOT certifications for Bituminous, Concrete and Aggregate within 2 years of hire.
  • Natural gas Operator Qualifications within 1 year of hire.
  • MnDOT ADA sidewalk certification within 1 year of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Gather preliminary topographic surveys.
  • Provide construction control, stakes, and information for public improvements.
  • Operate and maintain survey and GPS equipment for accurate measurements.
  • Process survey information and perform data entry.
  • Prepare GIS graphics, review GIS data for accuracy, and update databases.
  • Create roadway/public infrastructure plans using Autodesk software and prepare studies.
  • Prepare bidding documents for roads, utilities, and public improvements.
  • Perform construction administration and on-site inspections.
  • Maintain records: daily logs, progress reports, measurements, and change orders.
  • Act as liaison between the public, contractors, and City Administration.
  • Locate underground utilities and investigate inquiries.
  • Study findings and report conclusions in oral and/or written form.
  • Coordinate work with contractors, outside agencies, and City personnel.
  • Assist MnDOT Team Leader in Bridge Safety inspections.
