Job description

Join the South Dakota Local Transportation Assistance Program ( SDLTAP ) as a part-time Civil Engineering Technician and play a crucial role in connecting local governments with cutting-edge transportation solutions. This is your chance to drive innovation, enhance infrastructure, and empower local officials with the knowledge and tools they need to improve highways and bridges for the benefit of their communities. This position is eligible to work remotely within the state of South Dakota.

The SDLTAP translates the latest highway and bridge technology into understandable terms for local government entities throughout the state. In linking transportation technology and local government, SDLTAP keeps local government officials informed about new publications, techniques and training opportunities that may benefit their communities.

Job Responsibilities:

Provide various types of technical and other assistance to clientele of SD LTAP and support the overall outreach and service function of the College of Engineering ( COE ). Assist and develop material in the support of various workshops/conferences/training. Write technical articles and bulletins for publication/delivery by the SD LTAP.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Strong knowledge/background of local bridges and highway systems.

Skill & Ability to:

  • Gather information and document problems, solutions and recommendations in technical memorandums or reports;
  • Determine appropriate delivery methods for technical and training presentations;
  • Develop materials for workshops, present verbally to both large and small audiences including hands-on exercises and appropriate visual aids;
  • Gain confidence and trust of clientele;
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, with clientele to provide helpful, on-site technical advice;
  • Participate in local, regional, or occasional national travel, as required which may include occasional overnight stays;
  • Effectively use computer software applications including word processing, e-mail, presentation software, etc.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in road and bridge maintenance
