Job summary

The Idaho Transportation Department offers civil engineering internship opportunities in Coeur d’Alene, Lewiston, Boise, Shoshone, Pocatello, and Idaho Falls. Interns gain practical, real-world experience across design, data collection, ORD CAD drafting, and site visits.

Open to undergraduate or graduate engineering students (civil preferred), with strong communication and analytical skills, and the ability to meet deadlines while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications

• Must be an undergraduate or graduate student currently enrolled in an accredited engineering program (civil preferred).
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to analyze information, make decisions, and meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Assist with design projects for transportation infrastructure projects, including roads, bridges, and traffic systems.
• Data collection and analysis: gather field data and assist with traffic surveys.
• CAD drafting: use ORD to create and update project plans and drawings under supervision.
• Construction site inspections: participate in site visits to monitor progress and conditions.
• Materials testing: WAQTC certification if available, assist with basic testing and documentation.
• Traffic studies: collect and analyze traffic data to support planning.
• Report preparation: help prepare project reports and technical documentation.
• Collaboration: work with engineers, project managers, planners and other professionals.
