Job summary

Benchmark Utility Services in Wisconsin is seeking a Civil Engineering Intern to support active utility construction projects through a structured rotational program, gaining exposure to field operations and office-based project coordination.

You will assist Field Engineers and Project Management with technical documentation, field verification, and administrative tasks while developing a foundational understanding of design-build utilities.

Qualifications

• Must be currently enrolled in a Civil Engineering or related degree program.
• Basic understanding of construction drawings and technical documentation.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD and/or Civil 3D preferred but not required.
• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
• Ability to communicate clearly and professionally.
• Willingness to work in both field and office environments.
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel to job sites.

Responsibilities

• Assist with field surveys and layout activities using GPS, total station, and data collection tools.
• Support utility installation verification including trenching, conduit/pipe installation, backfill, and restoration.
• Update as-built drawings by collecting field data and redlines for field team review.
• Participate in quality and safety inspections and report findings.
• Track daily construction activities and assist with basic production reporting.
• Coordinate with field crews to maintain up-to-date field documentation.
• Assist with project documentation including RFIs, submittals, daily reports, and change logs.
• Support schedule updates and progress tracking by gathering information from field teams.
• Assist with billing and cost tracking preparation including organizing backup documentation.
• Update redlines and as-built drawings in AutoCAD or Civil 3D under supervision.
• Observe procurement activities including vendor communication and material tracking.
• Maintain organized project files and documentation.

Position Summary

The Civil Engineering Intern supports active utility construction projects through a structured rotational program that provides exposure to both field operations and office-based project coordination. Interns assist Field Engineers and Project Management teams with technical documentation, field verification, and administrative project support while developing a foundational understanding of design-build utility construction. This role is designed for learning, hands‑on experience, and professional development under close supervision.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities – Field Rotation (Approx. 6 Weeks)

• Assist with field surveys and layout activities using GPS, total station, and data collection tools under supervision.
• Observe and support utility installation verification including trenching, conduit/pipe installation, backfill, and restoration activities.
• Assist in updating as-built drawings by collecting field data and redlines for review by Field Engineers.
• Participate in quality and safety inspections, documenting observations and reporting findings to supervisors.
• Track daily construction activities and assist with basic production reporting.
• Coordinate with field crews to gather accurate information and maintain up-to-date field documentation.
• Support end-of-day documentation and reporting processes as directed.
