Job summary

Schnabel Engineering is seeking a temporary full-time Civil Engineering Intern to support our geotechnical and tunnel projects. The role emphasizes applying professional principles to real problems under senior staff supervision, with May–August 2027 as the term.

Ideal candidates are ABET-accredited Civil Engineering students who value hands-on learning, field and office work, and teamwork in a people-focused firm. Relocation is not required, and a valid driver’s license is preferred.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited Civil Engineering Bachelor’s program.
• Possess good oral and written communication skills and computer literacy.
• Ability to work with direction as part of a team and willingness to work outdoors; able to lift up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Apply professional principles and numerical models to real-world problems under senior engineers’ supervision.
• Assist in preparing CAD drawings for contract documents and reports per internal guidelines.
• Perform structural and geotechnical design calculations for tunnels and underground structures.

We approach problems with creativity and innovation. Schnabel is seeking a temporary full-time intern with a Civil Engineering background to support our growing business. The emphasis for this position is broadening the intern’s practical knowledge and experience by applying professional principles to real problems under the supervision of senior engineering personnel. The position will be held from May through August of 2027.

Job Responsibilities

• Apply professional principles, complex numerical models, and innovative solutions to real-world problems as part of a team of engineers and scientists while under the supervision of senior engineering personnel.
• Assist in the preparation of CAD drawings for contract documents and reports with input and guidance from senior engineers in accordance with internal drafting procedures and guidelines.
• Perform structural and geotechnical design calculations for tunnels and underground structures including tunnels, shafts, excavation support, and other underground facilities.

Required Skills/Experience

• Current enrollment in an ABET-accredited Civil Engineering Bachelor’s. Enrollment in other college engineering or relevant science programs may be considered.
• Possess good oral and written communication skills and computer literacy
• Ability to work with direction as part of a team
• Willingness to perform a variety of tasks including office and field work
• Desire and willingness to work outdoors
• Ability to routinely lift up to 50 pounds

Preferred Skills/Experience

• Master’s degree in Civil Engineering
• Junior, senior, and graduate students
• Prior professional work or summer intern work in a related field

Other Requirements

• Must possess a valid driver’s license as driving is an essential function of the job
• Ability to pass a background check which may include criminal history, motor vehicle record and credit check
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening

The compensation range for a Civil Engineering Intern is between $19.00 to $25.00 per hour. Compensation for this position may vary based on geographic location and other factors. We remain committed to providing competitive and equitable compensation to all employees, regardless of their location.
