Job summary

Schnabel Engineering seeks a temporary full-time Civil Engineering intern to support our growing practice. The role focuses on broadening practical knowledge under senior engineer supervision, from May through August of 2027.

You will engage in geotechnical fieldwork, construction observation, lab testing, AutoCAD/GIS tasks, and proposal support, with some travel expected.

Qualifications

• Enrollment in ABET-accredited Civil Engineering bachelor’s program.
• Good oral and written communication skills and computer literacy.
• Ability to work with direction as part of a team.
• Willingness to perform a variety of tasks including office and field work.
• Desire and willingness to work outdoors.
• Ability to routinely lift up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Perform geotechnical field work: observe subsurface exploration, layout borings with GPS, and perform infiltration testing.
• Perform construction observation and materials testing at sites.
• Perform laboratory testing.
• Create basic plans and figures using AutoCAD and GIS.
• Provide support to engineers on preparing geotechnical proposals and reports.
• Some travel may be required.

The emphasis for this position is broadening the intern’s practical knowledge and experience by applying professional principles to real problems under the supervision of senior engineering personnel. The position will be held from May through August of 2027.

Required Skills/Experience

• Current enrollment in an ABET-accredited Civil Engineering Bachelor’s. Enrollment in other college engineering or relevant science programs may be considered.

• Desire and willingness to work outdoors
• Ability to routinely lift up to 50 pounds

Preferred Skills/Experience

• Master’s degree in Civil Engineering
• Junior, senior, and graduate students
• Prior professional work or summer intern work in a related field

Other Requirements

• Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license as driving is an essential function of the job
• Ability to pass a background check which may include criminal history, motor vehicle record and credit check
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening

The compensation range for a Civil Engineering Intern is between $19.00 to $25.00. Compensation for this position may vary based on geographic location and other factors. We remain committed to providing competitive and equitable compensation to all employees, regardless of their location.
