Job summary

Hurt & Proffitt invites motivated Civil Engineering students to join our Lynchburg team for the summer of 2027. This paid internship offers hands-on experience across water resources, land development, transportation and general civil engineering design in a professional consulting environment.

Interns work alongside experienced engineers, gain exposure to project life cycles from concept through construction, and develop practical skills in planning, drafting, and data collection while building

Qualifications

• Pursuing a Bachelor's in Civil Engineering or related field.
• Completed coursework in civil engineering fundamentals.
• Strong communication and organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently and in a team.
• Attention to detail; willingness to learn.
• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD/Civil 3D is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Assist engineers and designers with civil engineering and design projects.
• Gain exposure to land development, water resources, transportation, and other areas of civil engineering.
• Assist with preparation of engineering plans, details, and technical documents.
• Perform basic engineering calculations and research under supervision.
• Assist with field visits, site inspections, and data collection.
• Learn and utilize engineering design software and technology.
• Assist with drafting and plan production.
• Participate in project meetings and collaborate with project team.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Hurt & Proffitt is seeking several Civil Engineering Interns to join our Lynchburg team for the summer of 2027. This is a great opportunity for a current college student to gain hands-on experience and learn about the many aspects of civil engineering and design in a professional consulting environment.

Our Lynchburg office works on a variety of projects involving water resources, land development, transportation, and civil engineering design. Interns will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced engineers and designers while gaining practical experience that complements their education.

Responsibilities

• Assist engineers and designers with civil engineering and design projects.


• Gain exposure to land development, water resources, transportation, and other areas of civil engineering.


• Assist with preparation of engineering plans, details, and technical documents.


• Perform basic engineering calculations and research under the direction of experienced staff.


• Assist with field visits, site inspections, and data collection.


• Learn and utilize engineering design software and technology.


• Assist with drafting and plan production.


• Participate in project meetings and collaborate with other members of the project team.


• Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.


• Completed coursework in civil engineering fundamentals.


• Strong communication and organizational skills.


• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.


• Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn.


• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.


• Familiarity with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or other engineering software is a plus.

Internship Requirements

• Must be available to work a minimum of 35 hours per week.


• Actual internship dates may vary depending on class schedules and other commitments.


• Reliable transportation is required, as some projects may require early mornings or occasional late evenings.


• Must be willing to work both in an office environment and occasionally in the field.

Estimated Base Pay Range: $20 - $22 per hour
